ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY: Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on a scenic waterfront site in Vallejo, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1100 undergraduates and 50 graduate students. The campus currently offers undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Marine Transportation, Global and Maritime Studies, and Business Administration. A master's degree in Transportation and Engineering Management is offered as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.
Position Summary: The Office of University Advancement manages the fundraising efforts on behalf of the California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime), which includes soliciting individuals, corporations, foundations and professional associations for both operational and capital campaign needs. It is also responsible for university public affairs and communications, alumni relations, government relations and organizes and conducts special fundraising events.
Under the direction of the Senior Director of Development and Campaign (Senior Director), the Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations (DAGAR) provides leadership and management of the creation and maintenance of programs that engage alumni and students. The goals of these programs are to disseminate information about Cal Maritime and motivate constituencies to support the University. The director is also responsible for aligning annual giving and alumni relation strategies and outreach with the priorities of the Senior Director, the advancement of Cal Maritime, and ensuring a streamlined and integrated approach to all alumni.
The director is responsible for the planning, development and execution of a comprehensive and highly effective annual giving program to build a long-term base of support with the goal of raising unrestricted funds for operations, scholarships, and other areas of greatest need. The director has an appreciation of the foundation of annual giving as the enabling component of successful major and planned gifts programs and accountability for program results.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: ANNUAL GIVING
Provide leadership and strategy for the Annual Giving program, including the development of: direct mail strategies, e-solicitations, student alumni and faculty/staff giving campaign, the President's Circle for Excellence, parent and volunteer programming, and a modified phonathon program.
Determine goals, methods of solicitation, segmentation of potential donor populations, themes, design and production of campaign materials and timelines for the Annual Fund program.
Construct an annual giving program, based on historic giving analysis that results in a successful stream of projectable and predictable income.
In collaboration with the Director of Advancement Services (DAS), create a set of 'dashboard' reports that will be used to gauge and increase the level of alumni participation, retention rate of prior year's donors, effectiveness of various campaigns, and to determine other factors critical in making effective programming decisions.
Develop and manage the annual fund budget and expenses.
Monitor the collection of all pledges and create new methods to increase both pledges and percentages of pledges collected.
Responsible for the creation, writing, design and production of all annual giving solicitation materials, annual reports, and stewardship correspondence.
Analyze and create annual giving policies and procedures.
Devise methods to encourage new and increased giving with a focus on building donor loyalty.
Keep current on innovative fundraising and alumni relations strategies being used by comparable institutions and within the profession.
Represent the division of university advancement and the University at large public events, dinners and both large and individual meetings for the purpose of marketing the University and the identification, cultivation and stewardship of donors and prospects. Participates in staffing all alumni events, major gifts events, and other advancement events and programs.
Record contact information learned from visits or conversations with donor prospects in a timely manner.
Working with Public Affairs and Communications (PAC), create a web presence for the Annual Fund and implement marketing strategies for e-solicitation to increase the number of gifts received via the website.
Hold their own prospect pool and have annual goals for visitation and outcomes
Partner with other areas of university advancement and the University on programs that further engage students/families/parents through young alumni and parent programming.
Provide leadership and management of the creation and maintenance of programs that engage alumni and students in ways that inform them about their alma mater and motivates them to support Cal Maritime through attendance at campus functions, participating in events, becoming donors, extending the influence of Cal Maritime within their networks, and providing the leadership, service and advice that maintains the excellence of their alma mater.
Provides leadership and service to the alumni association volunteer board and serves as the staff liaison for the Alumni Association's chapter programs and activities.
Responsible for planning and conducting all alumni-related activities and programs that are designed and integrated with University Advancement in order to support Cal Maritime's priorities. This position serves as a member of the University Advancement team for alumni donor cultivation, various fundraising campaigns, and special events.
Envision programs and services to connect individuals and groups of alumni with their alma mater and cultivates and stewards relationships with individuals and groups of Cal Maritime stakeholders.
Attend and staff all Alumni Association Board of Director's meetings. Working with the Alumni Association treasurer, ensure that the Alumni Association budget is prepared including measurable goals and outcomes, balanced, approved and revised as necessary for review at each Board meeting.
Ensure that all programs, services, interactions and initiatives that engage alumni and the association board are carried out with the highest level of accountability
Identify, solicit and cultivate highly qualified alumni volunteers to serve as effective and influential members of the alumni association board of directors and other alumni committees. Train alumni leaders for volunteer roles on university committees, projects and initiatives.
Provide guidance and counseling to existing board members to assist them in playing a valuable part in the success of the Association's goals.
Oversee the coordination and implementation of the Distinguished Alumni Awards program.
Serve as the Student Alumni Association's advisor, which includes attending association meetings, committee meetings, serving as a mentor to the students, as well as meeting with individual student leaders on a regular basis.
Develop, plan and implement programs and activities that will attract and engage students with leadership potential and foster participation with alumni and future participation with the University.
Along with the PAC, manage the alumni website and all alumni electronic communications.
Establish and implement goals and strategies to communicate effectively with alumni and deploy them individually and collectively as important resources of Cal Maritime.
Working in collaboration with the Cal Maritime advancement team, the director will develop a coordinated matrix of communication, engagement, and programs to establish a solid base for expanding alumni relations.
Develop collaborative and mutually beneficial working relationships with student affairs, athletics, and other units that lead to greater involvement and/or service to alumni.
Provide leadership to geographic and special interest alumni chapters and events, including summer sendoff events.
A bachelor's degree in a related field is required.
Demonstrated work or extensive volunteer experience in managing annual fund and/or alumni programs.
Demonstrated advance skills in planning, identifying and cultivating alumni for philanthropic engagement opportunities.
Demonstrated experience in interacting with corporate executives and individual leaders.
Demonstrated experience in higher education annual fundraising and alumni engagement.
Ability to train and inspire others to volunteer and to ask for charitable gifts.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL and ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: LIGHT WORK - involves mainly sitting with up to 25% of the activities involving regular standing or walking; involves lifting of medium weight objects limited to 25 pounds. HOURS OF WORK/TRAVEL: Position requires travel and a commitment to working some evenings and weekends.
