Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Research Technologist will work in a laboratory which focuses on the mechanisms through which gut microbiota can affect neurogenesis and neuronal differentiation in the enteric nervous system. Under the direct supervision of the faculty, the individual will be responsible for performing routine and complex tests in a research laboratory and contributing to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment and supplies. The individual will be responsible for mouse colony management and genotyping. He/She will perform basic lab functions and will help with routine experimental work like tissue processing, cell culture work and ordering related agents. This individual will also aid in variety of both routine and complex research experiments including molecular biology and histology experiments, analyzing data and making informal presentations to others about his/her work.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities: This individual will participate in planning studies and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing a basic and learned knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices involving neurogastroenterology disorders. These lab-based duties will include:
Operate standard equipment, use standard procedures for specific laboratory tests and preparation techniques.
Perform mice maintenance and generating mouse strains (breeding and genotyping of mice).
Process tissue for qPCR and PCR, histology immunohistochemistry, and immunoblotting.
Responsible for laboratory maintenance, preparing solutions and media and ordering supplies.
Identify and report problems in completion of routine lab processes.
Careful record keeping of sample information and results to guarantee quality of experimentation.
Assists with troubleshooting of technical and experimental issues.
Contributes to selecting, developing, performing and evaluating research methods; operates appropriate equipment.
Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Basic knowledge of and employ good tissue culture techniques.
Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages.
Uses good practices for data record keeping and analysis.
Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Keeps current knowledge of vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory requirements.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field required.
Some related post –undergraduate work experience preferred. Familiarity with basic laboratory research techniques is desired.
