The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) is a self-supporting unit within the University of California. Funding is generated through fees collected from a diverse, complex, and ever-changing student population. Part-time instructor positions are on a course by course contracted basis. This is NOT a faculty position.
This is pool recruitment for campus and online teaching positions that may become available in the Personal Financial Planning Certificate Program. We are seeking qualified instructors with current knowledge and work experience in the Estate Planning industry who can create an interactive and engaging learning environment for students.
Course Title: Estate Planning Course Description: Learn how to guide your clients in protecting and transferring their wealth. If you are a trust officer, attorney, life insurance underwriter or financial planner, this course gives you the fundamental background of what you need to know in proactively meeting your clients' estate planning needs. Gain an insider's grasp of tax objectives, wills and living trusts, the unlimited marital deduction while exploring the most concepts and methods relating to lifetime gifts and trusts, title to property, life insurance and annuities, business interest, post death tax and legal problems. Course Learning Objectives
Compare and contrast the most common types of titling property and select the most appropriate property transfer mechanism for a client's situation.
Recommend appropriate estate planning documents to meet a client's goals and objectives and develop a strategy for managing incapacity.
Determine when gifting strategies are appropriate and calculate the gift tax and income tax consequences of lifetime transfers to individuals and charities.
Estimate federal estate tax liability, and determine the need for and sources of estate liquidity.
Evaluate the most common forms of lifetime powers of appointment and ensure compliance with client's goals and objectives.
Define and describe the uses of revocable, irrevocable (including irrevocable life insurance trust), living and testamentary trusts, and determine when a qualified interest trust is needed and its relationship to the marital deduction.
Recommend a plan that minimizes both income and estate taxes within the context of a client's goals and objectives and identify the circumstances that trigger the generation skipping transfer tax.
Recommend appropriate business transfer techniques.
Define fiduciary duties and identify the parties that would be subject to it.
Identify the most common income that may be classified as IRD including pay, interest, dividends and business income.
Describe when an executor should elect to value estate assets using the alternative valuation date.
Recommend strategies that can be implemented to help ensure the appropriate management and transfer of assets to same-sex, non-traditional and/or non-married partners. Classes are held in a variety of formats: Daytime or evening on-ground, and online. Specific Instructor Duties
Develop and/or update course syllabi in consultation with the UCI Division of Continuing Education (DCE) Program Director as assigned and using approved syllabus template
Prepare and deliver course materials and learning assessments in the assigned format (Evening, Daytime, Online, or Hybrid)
Online instructors will prepare video recorded lectures and/or PowerPoint-style presentations with audio, forum discussions, and webinars, among other things
Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System as the course support platform
Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students, and clearly outline the grading policies for the course
Evaluate student achievement of specific learning outcomes, and assign grades
Post final student grades to the transcript system by set deadlines
Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner
Handle student inquiries about final grades and consult with Director as needed
Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in the field of practice
Participate in required orientations and complete mandatory training programs by deadlines established by UC Irvine
Complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner including: completing all hiring paperwork; submitting updated quarterly syllabi; posting bio and photo on the UCI DCE website; signing quarterly contract; ordering required texts; communicating AV and classroom needs
Employ culturally competent teaching methodologies in the classroom inclusive of both domestic and international student populations
Allow students to review their final exams/papers for up to 13 months following the last class session
Use subject-matter expertise and leverage additional resources appropriately to enhance the curriculum (i.e.: make arrangements for guest speakers, etc.)
Design interactive and motivational classroom activities to fully engage participants and to reinforce student learning
Update materials periodically, and regularly monitor course evaluations in order to make adjustments and improvements to the curriculum
