The University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology invites applications for one 100% time Junior Specialist position in the sub-specialty area of Metabolic and Cardiovascular Research. Junior Specialist appointees will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in Pharmacology sub-specialties in the areas stated above. The incumbent will devote 90% of time to research, and 10% to university and public service as described below. Junior Specialist positions are short term, two-year maximum appointments based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
Research (90%): Successful candidates will participate in laboratory and/or human-subject studies. The incumbent will actively participate in creative activities including research presentation and publications. Tasks will include development of transgenic mouse colonies and therapeutic animal studies, performing in vitro cell culture, immunoblotting, PCR analysis. In addition, the incumbent will analyze and organize data that contributes to the writing of manuscripts suitable for publication. Candidates will review relevant journal articles, participate in scientific discussions in both the lab setting and more formal venues such as weekly lab meetings, the monthly departmental research in progress talks and when appropriate local national and international scientific meetings such as Davis cardiovascular symposium.
Service (10%): The incumbent must be self-motivated and able to work independently. The incumbent will be expected to present data orally, or by poster presentations, or during the weekly laboratory meeting, where-in their assignments may be adjusted to accommodate the data being collected. Outside of laboratory meetings, the principle investigator, and/or higher grade researchers, may periodically add assignments or redirect the workflow of the incumbent, but will not provide constant supervision. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in a related field is required by the start date of this position. Basic qualifications include appropriate lab experience in the appropriate sub-specialty area.
The candidate should have minimal one-year experience in laboratory or extensive research experience as an undergraduate researcher. The candidate should also have experience working with transgenic animal maintenance including breeding, weaning, ear tagging, and genotyping. Additional background in animal euthanasia and tissue collection and staining is preferred. The candidate should also have expertise in cell culture techniques and should be familiar with the procedures for proper maintenance of a cell culture facility. The candidate should also have experience in western blot and DNA gel.
Knowledge of, and previous experience with the cell culture and molecular biology techniques that are associated with the daily laboratory tasks is a necessity. Methods and procedures are associated with technical duties to apply a limited number of procedures applicable to duties common to the biological science(s) supported with little discretion to deviate from the technical methods assigned. Incumbent must have the ability to follow protocols and make minor protocol deviations, and at times, consult with their PI for guidance, as required and necessary. The candidate should also be familiar with the PrePurchasing system as well as the UC Learning Management System. Successful candidates have experience working in a team and can effectively communicate their knowledge to others.
The worksite for this position will be in Tupper Hall, located on UCD Campus in Davis. Potential hazards in the laboratory may include human and animal tissue, adenoviruses and some carcinogenic substances.
