The Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science (TECS) (https://textiles.ncsu.edu/tecs/) is a unique, interdisciplinary department dedicated to the science, engineering and technical applications throughout the vast textile complex. TECS is within the Wilson College of Textiles, which is known as the global leader in textile innovation in terms of education, research and service, and TECS is also an affiliated department of the College of Engineering (COE). The faculty within TECS are multidisciplinary and their backgrounds represent a diverse set of STEM disciplines. The TECS faculty, staff, and students work closely with partners within the textile complex and beyond, thus graduates easily find employment in both textile and non-textile areas, and over two-thirds of research funding in TECS comes from industrial sources.
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar position in the Fiber and Polymer Science Program at North Carolina State University (https://textiles.ncsu.edu/tecs/). The successful candidate will perform research on an Industrial-funded confidential grant to develop manufacturing systems for fiber-shaped energy-storage devices as well as engineering their interfaces with other electronic components. The successful candidate will contribute to a multi-disciplinary team of researchers studying two-dimensional materials, fiber spinning, and device fabrication. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with engineers, chemists and material scientists. Specific activities by the postdoctoral researcher will include –but not be limited to- the development, characterization, and evaluation of two-dimensional material based spinning lines. In addition to research activities, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, proposal writing, and other activities as part of her/his postdoctoral training.
The position is anticipated to begin on Sep 1, 2019, for duration of one year, with possibility of extension to a second year, depending on satisfactory performance. Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.
Required qualifications for this position are a Ph.D. in materials/organic chemistry, chemical engineering, machine learning or a closely related field, with a focus on device fabrication and interface engineering.
Experience with materials synthesis and characterization as well as with the energy-storage devices will be seen favorably, but is not required. An established record of research productivity is also highly desired.
