The General Maintenance Worker is a skilled position that performs routine maintenance and repairs on the interior and exterior of buildings. Responsibilities include elements of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing, locks, and painting as well as other specialized skills. This position may operate machinery and is routinely involved in all duties that require preventive maintenance. Reports to the Supervisor or Maintenance and/or Manager of Operations.
Repair and replace walls, floors, ceilings (including suspended grid ceilings), doors and windows.
Repair light fixtures; replace lamps and ballasts; replace defective switches and receptacles.
Repair sinks, toilets, tubs and showers; replace washers, seats, seals and gaskets.
Check and replace air filters and fan belts; check and reset thermometers as needed.
Visually inspect pumps, air handlers and fans for proper operation.
Grease or oil bearings as needed.
Inspect roofs, drains, gutters, and downspouts; clear debris as needed.
Check door locks and lock mechanisms; clean and repair as needed.
Paint (or stain) walls, ceilings, doors and windows; uses spackle, putty, wood filler, sealers, finishes and other materials as needed to repair and restore various surfaces.
Work alongside and communicate with the physical plant and university staff in a positive manner to support the smooth operation of the university equipment and systems.
Integrate the core values of respect, compassion, integrity, justice and service in all aspects of interaction.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor, Operations Manager and/or Director of Facilities. Will also take direction from Lead Electrician / HVAC Technician.
All aspects of preventative maintenance
High School diploma or equivalent.
Two to three years experience as a maintenance worker.
Knowledge of general maintenance procedures and universal precautions regarding safety, fire, and OSHA.
Ability to use maintenance equipment, such as pressure washer, power tools, and hand tools.
Good communication, organization and interpersonal skills.
Ability to train other employees in their group.
Ability to work independently as well as part of the maintenance team.
Possess a valid and current driver's license as regulated by State of residency.
Physical demands include: Requires lifting 100 pounds maximum, with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects up to 50 pounds.
