Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Diversity, equity, and inclusion is fundamental to everything we do at the University of Minnesota. We are dedicated to creating a campus culture that supports and respects everyone equally.
We are building a culture where differences are valued, as diverse voices lead to innovation. We recognize that many individuals and groups have been traditionally marginalized in academic medicine, and it is our responsibility to serve and support them as an institution. These individuals and groups include: People of color, American Indian and Indigenous populations, including historically underrepresented groups and new immigrant populations; People with both apparent and non-apparent disabilities; Women; People of various gender and sexual identities and expressions; and First-generation students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. We also address issues of access and climate for individuals who might encounter barriers based on their religious expression, age, national origin, ethnicity, or veteran status.
The State of Minnesota celebrates diverse communities from our indigenous American Indian Dakota and Ojibwe to immigrants from Somalia, Laos, and Mexico, but much work remains to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion. Hence, the University of Minnesota and the Medical School aspires to build a representative community of faculty, students, and staff and become a medical school where everyone feels they belong and can thrive. To this end, the University of Minnesota Medical School has created a new leadership position of Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
