Assistant Vice President, Principal Gifts and Donor Engagement Programs - Office of Advancement
The Office of Advancement supports the mission of Georgetown University, its faculty, and students by developing relationships with key constituencies, connecting with alumni, and working with donors to help them know and understand opportunities for partnership with the university.
The Assistant Vice President (AVP) forPrincipal and Donor Engagement will serve as chief pipeline manager and strategist for principal giving and will develop and implement a sophisticated and programmatic approach to principal giving at Georgetown. The AVP will also oversee well-established Donor Relations and Stewardship teams, including oversight of all engagement with the Office of the President and the university's volunteer bodies.
The AVP will facilitate the implementation of planning and cultivation strategies for constituents and stakeholders for the purpose of securing philanthropic gifts of $5 million or more. Through a partnership with Development teams, this individual will foster connections and support the formation of new and established relationships with top-tier donors and prospective donors. To grow the principal and transformative (P&T) gifts pipeline from roughly $400 million in the previous campaign to $1 billion+ in the upcoming campaign, the incumbent will continue to build organization and systems that provide accurate, timely, and comprehensive information concerning the P&T gift pipeline and individual prospective donor strategies, synthesize research and information to present persuasive rationale for cultivation/solicitation strategies, provide management by monitoring and reporting on the principal gift pipeline and manage the coordination of work flow for principal prospects through effective pipeline management.
The AVP will also oversee the coordination of the Presidential & Principal Travel program tracking all principal travel across major markets in partnership with development teams, including the coordination of presidential-level briefings. Works directly with Donor Relations and President's Office staff to best deploy the President of the university, both proactively and reactively, ensuring that the President meets with prospects as needed, developing and deepening critical relationships with the university.
Through management of a well-established Stewardship team, the AVP will be responsible for ensuring we have an outstanding stewardship program including high level acknowledgement letters, physical donor recognition, and fund and endowment reporting. This individual will be an ambassador for stewardship across the university.
The AVP will oversee the strategic management, engagement and fundraising outcomes for the highest-level volunteers, donors and prospective donors of Georgetown University worldwide in managing the Donor Engagement and Relations team, who is responsible for ensuring high level regional engagement of top prospective donors, engagement of volunteers, recognition of top donors through strategic events and management of the 1789 giving society.
The AVP reports to the Senior Associate Vice President, Campaign and Advancement Operations, and will oversee the Senior Director of Donor Relations and Engagement, the Senior Director of Stewardship, and will be responsible for building a Principal and Transformative Gift team with the assistance of the Senior Director of Principal and Transformative Gift Stewardship (also a direct report) and an Assistant Director. A strong trusting partnership with the Development team is critical to the success of this role. This position also works closely with university leadership, faculty and staff, Advancement staff, board members, and key volunteers. He/she will build on gift officers' work and provide leadership in the development of a collaborative team approach for engagement, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of principal gift level donors and prospective donors. The AVP will partner with senior leaders and key stakeholders around campus to reinforce with donors the university's appreciation for philanthropic support, helping sustain positive relationships with donors, and building a competitive edge for the university in its fundraising efforts.
The AVP will have duties that include, but are not limited to the following:
Management of Donor Engagement and Relations Team
Oversee a team of 7 staff members working to strategically manage, engage and ensure fundraising outcomes for the highest-level volunteers, donors and prospective donors of Georgetown University worldwide.
Responsible for ensuring high-level regional engagement of top prospective donors, recognition of top donors through strategic events and management of the 1789 giving society.
Provide leadership to the staff within this team who manage relationships with the university's volunteer bodies - directly with the Board of Regents and indirectly with Board of Directors in partnership the University Secretary.
Management of Stewardship Team
Oversee the Stewardship team of 11 staff to ensure an outstanding stewardship program including high level acknowledgement letters, physical donor recognition, and fund & endowment reporting.
Principal Giving Strategy and Pipeline Management
Responsible for day-to-day project management of the P&T Program.
Monitor the top donors and prospective donors to the university - those capable of making contributions in the $5-$100 million + range.
Manage the portfolio of the VP for Advancement and maintain oversight for all principal gift portfolios. Provide regular assistant to the VP for Advancement and Senior Associate Vice President for University Development on the overall development, growth, and implementation of a P&T Gifts Program, including regularly updating leadership on the strategy and relationship development for P&T constituents.
Manage the P&T pipeline and related reports.
Convenes Advancement staff and others systematically and as-needed to develop thoughtful and comprehensive strategies for P&T prospects and proactively ensures appropriate and timely follow-up coming out of these meetings. Lead meetings with P&T, campaign, and senior leadership staff to assess prospect management needs, consult on strategy, and provide project updates.
Partner with Donor Relations and Stewardship colleagues to ensure appropriate recognition and engagement opportunities are planned and executed, including the development of CRM-captured stewardship plans for $5 million + donors.
Collaborates with analytics, research, and development teams to ensure accurate data management.
Serve as a specialist on constituents capable of philanthropic gifts of $5 million or more and ensure that Advancement implements strategies to cultivate prospects at this level to maximize their support of the university.
Serves as the principal gift liaison to Planned Giving, developing a full understanding of the Planned Giving pipeline and necessary centralized resources.
Proactively coordinate the Presidential & Principal Travel program with the P&T Gifts Program, tracking all principal travel across major markets and coordinating with development teams and Donor Relations, including the coordination of presidential-level briefings.

Responsible for the recruitment, retention, supervision and evaluation of the principal gift, stewardship and donor engagement & relations teams.

Estimate resource requirements annually for staff, operations and capital needs; assess variances and project resource requirements.

Ensure staff assigned performance goals.
Provide direct and indirect management, supervision and oversight; ensure engagement and retention of the team through regular growth, development and career pathing conversations and strategies.
Manage special projects in coordination with the Sr. AVP.
Bachelor's degree required.
A minimum of 15 years of professional experience with at least 10 years in a higher education setting and relevant frontline development experience.
Demonstrated effective and motivational leadership and management experience in leading multiple teams towards a common goal.
Demonstrated analytical and creative problem-solving skills required.
Highly developed written and oral communications skills.
High degree of professionalism, diplomacy, poise, ethical sensitivity, discretion and commitment to confidentiality.
Superior interpersonal skills with a proven attitude of accuracy and flexibility.
