Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking Peer Support Specialist IIIs – Health Navigator for the Corrections Peer Orientation Project (C-Pop) at Rutgers, University Behavioral Health Care.
The Peer Support Specialist III (Health Navigator) is a member of the C-POP team who is responsible for the provision of pre- release orientation, recovery education and supports to individuals with an opioid use disorder (OUD) and other substance use disorders (SUD) who are incarcerated in New Jersey Department of Corrections Facilities Statewide.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Provides pre-release services to individuals who are recently incarcerated and beginning their period of incarceration.
Engages individuals in prison in order to initiate service-planning activities to prepare for their current incarceration sentence.
Uses his/her own lived experiences with incarceration and/or substance use recovery as a vehicle to establish rapport and build relationships.
Offers insights into the experience of living with a substance use disorder and relevant recovery supports in order to assist in identifying program environments and treatment approaches that are conducive to recovery.
Minimum Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
At least three years of previous relevant experience.
Direct experience with incarceration and/or substance use. May not have been incarcerated or on probation or parole for past five (5) years.
Certified or eligible for Certification as a Peer Support Specialist, Peer Health Navigator or Peer Bridger. If not certified, must complete a Peer Support Certification within twelve months of hire.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Experience with group facilitation
Bilingual skills (English/Spanish)
Serves assigned shift which may include one (1) weekend day.
On-call duties as assigned.
Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
Must submit to a random urine screen when requested.
