Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position in theoretical condensed matter physics and nonlinear dynamics of nanomechanical systems. The candidates are expected to have a PhD in theoretical physics or mechanical engineering. The successful candidate will work in the group of Professor Mark Dykman in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University and Professor Steven Shaw in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Florida Institute of Technology, who is also an UDP Emeritus and an Adjunct Professor of Physics at MSU. She or he will participate in the collaborative theoretical research on several aspects of the physics and dynamics of micro- and nano-mechanical systems, including understanding the mechanisms of fluctuations and dissipation, the dynamics in strong resonant fields, and the effects of mode coupling and the coupling between mechanical and electronic degrees of freedom. The initial appointment will be one year, but is renewable for an additional year, and potentially for yet another year, depending on mutual agreement. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to spend time at both MSU and Florida Tech in a mutually agreed manner and will meet regularly with the local principal investigator and by teleconference or in person with the other PI. Close collaboration with the leading theoretical and experimental groups in the US and abroad is envisioned.
