Position Summary: Meets with parents and students, by phone and in person. Counsels financial aid applicants and families regarding application procedures; collects and assesses information submitted. Reviews all tax returns for verification. Responds to all SFS Inbox inquiries.
Essential Functions: Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, parents and the general public.
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ensure that maximum care and service is used to assist students in the financing of their Middlebury Education.
Meet with Government agencies to confirm enrollment, tuition charges, loan borrowing and other required information for background checks.
Train and supervise federal work study and institutional work students with respect and integrity to ensure the goals and objectives of the department and the Institute are achieved.
Assist in development of innovative strategies to deliver student financial services through increased use of technology.
Produces reports as needed from computer or manual systems.
Maintains and updates the data contained in student files.
Present information to potential and admitted students in a public format as necessary.
Stay current on federal regulations and advise students of changes pertinent to them.

Oversees advertising, review of resumes, interviewing, hiring, scheduling and training of student workers. Examines financial aid applications, personal, corporate and partnership returns to determine if we have the complete details of each familys financial situation necessary to make an aid decision. Requests clarification and/or additional information as necessary. Counsels applicants and their families regarding the aid application process, requirements and deadlines. Answers general questions regarding components of the financial aid package and both Middlebury SFS and Federal aid policies and their impact on an aid package. Also, responds to inquiries on billing process and payments to student accounts. Oversees maintenance and repair of office copy/fax machines; responsible for ordering office supplies and for creating payment vouchers for supplies and all CSS Profile and IDOC charges Maintains and moves paper files according to annual work cycle. Performs other duties as requested.
Qualifcation Education: Bachelors degree preferred or minimum Associates with relevant work considered. A strong working knowledge of Student Financial Services preferred. Knowledge of the Ellucian Banner system specifically as it relates to the financial aid, student accounts receivable, and finance modules, is desired. Finally, a strong commitment to service students is required for the success of the office of student financial planning. Therefore, a strong commitment to service is an essential and mandatory trait of the Senior counselor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Must have strong organizational skills, as well as ability to counsel families. Knowledge of federal tax systems and forms required. Must handle confidential information in a discreet manner. Must have ability to successfully manage competing tasks. Must have ability to maintain customer service orientation in fast-paced, stressful environment. A strong commitment to service to parents and students is required for the success of the Student Financial Services team. Therefore, a strong commitment to service is an essential trait of the Senior Student Financial Services Counselor.
Experience: Three to five years of experience in an academic setting with significant computer experience including MS Word and Excel.
