Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Nurse Clinician, for the Office of Human Research Services (OHRS) at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
The primary purpose of the Research Nurse Clinician (RNC) is to ensure successful, patient-oriented, safe and effective conduct of clinical trials at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The Research Nurse Clinician assists investigators to prepare and implement new clinical trials, screens and enrolls study participants, and provides protocol-related clinical management to those participants while on study. Serves as a resource to other Cancer Institute faculty and staff on available protocols, and general research topics such as FDA, IRB and GCP regulations.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Prepares for study activation: Reviews protocol; collects multidisciplinary logistical, educational and financial feedback to identify potential obstacles to safe, effective study conduct; actively identifies and resolves conflicts in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI). Creates and/or performs quality assurance on study tools such as the eligibility checklist, patient diaries, staff task guides, etc. Performs one on one or group protocol related education to other disciplines to facilitate safe, effective care of enrolled patients.
Tracks protocol progress through approval system (SRB, HROC, Local IRB, WIRB) through use of Oncore™ to identify status. Proactively coordinates activities essential to the activation process in collaboration with the Clinical Research Review Specialist CRRS).
Translates finalized protocol treatment plan, study calendar and clinical trials billing grid into sample orders. Prepares pre-printed treatment order set or Sunrise Disease Manager flow sheet.
Prepares, reviews and updates personal task guides and study binders for each protocol in collaboration with the Clinical Research Review Specialist (CRRS). Disseminates updates related to amendments to research TSG members at research meetings and through other routine venues.
Writes protocol-specific orders, including eligibility work-up requirements through the end of study transition to next site of care. Coordinates/oversees continuity of care for study patients between disciplines/sites of care (other TSG's, MD practices, inpatient stays, etc.). Clarifies primary practice responsibilities for patient needs during transitional periods. Facilitates communication of needed clinical information to facilitate care within HIPAA guidelines.
Provides nursing assessment of study patients by phone or in person – identifies and routes patient as indicated to meet additional or urgent care needs. Uses correct CTC version to objectively document toxicities. Provides informal teaching/coaching to clinicians on proper toxicity assessment grading.
Continually assesses team and overall compliance with protocol; documents deviations and violations. Participates in audits and root cause analyses, i.e. protocol specific QA/QI.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.
One (1) year of oncology experience.
Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Maintains active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Detail oriented, have excellent organizational skills.
Proficient in computer applications (Oncore, Word, Excel, etc.).
Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be able to maximize resources and be resourceful.
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
Three (3) to five (5) years of oncology research experience.
Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification as an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse (AOCN).
Association of Clinical Research Professional as a Clinical Research Analyst (CRA) or Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA) certification as a Clinical Research Professional (CCRP).
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
PHYSICALDEMANDS: On-site and offsite walking, sitting, standing and bending. No special vision requirements. Lift or exert up to 25 lbs.
Must have a valid driver’s license and possesses own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.
