Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Researcher IV (LR IV) for the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT). The position requires the working knowledge of hot mix asphalt design and laboratory testing related to its performance in the field. The LR IV also requires the understanding of pavement construction practices. The Laboratory Researcher IV is required to support pavement-related research activities under the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) at Rutgers University. The position reports directly to the Supervisor of the Rutgers University Asphalt/Pavement Laboratory (RAPL) within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rutgers University. The LR IV completes work under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, with specific instructions on routine and semi-routine work and/or within established work parameters.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Performs professional entry level research experiments and research using various asphalt and pavement evaluation-based techniques.
Carries out routine and non-routine work with review of work outputs by the Laboratory Supervisor.
Operates and maintains highly specialized equipment, in addition to maintaining and keeping the work place (laboratory) organized, clean, and calibrated.
Provides knowledge or experience with AMRL on-site assessments
Trains and leads students and lower level technicians through various established testing procedures and should have some experience doing so.
Minimum Education and Experience:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to perform numerous physical activities, some that require the moving and lifting of heavy materials.
Must be able to read and understand technical documents, operate scientific instruments and computers, perform detailed work and manage multiple tasks.
Computer literacy, especially Microsoft Excel and Word, is mandatory.
Mechanically knowledgeable since many of the testing equipment will need routine maintenance and calibration.
Both the Level 1 and Level 2 New Jersey Society of Asphalt Technologists (NJSAT) certification in Hot Mix Asphalt Design and Hot Mix Asphalt Plant Technician.
Certifications in other types of hot mix asphalt design desirable.
Experience working in a university laboratory/field research setting related to civil engineering is also desirable.
Familiarity with roadway design and construction practices.
Servo-pneumatic test systems: In particular, a piece of test equipment called the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer.
Gyratory compactors, vibratory compactors, and impact hammer compactors which are commonly used in the asphalt industry for design and preparation of performance testing.
NCAT Ignition Ovens used for the determination of a paving mixtures asphalt content.
PinePave: An Excel based design program used for the design and aggregate blending of materials used to design Hot Mix Asphalt.
Excel: A basic knowledge of the use of Excel is mandatory. This software is not only used for design purposes, but is also used for many of the mathematical computations, statistical analysis, and empirical modeling required in the position.
Word: A basic knowledge of the use of Word (or any equivalent word processing software) is mandatory. Due to the research nature of the work, any relevant findings from the research will be organized and sent out to peer review publications.
