Position Summary: The Assistant Director of Career Advising advises all populations of students on issues related to career planning strategies and provides coaching assistance to all levels of students. This includes career transition development, job search strategy planning and monitoring, resume and cover letter critiquing, mock interview critiquing, career assessment assistance, and job/internship negotiation assistance.Additionally, assists each student to develop and continually refine a realistic job search /marketing plan for internship, initial full-time employment, job transition, and re-entering the workforce strategy. Each advisee's progress is actively monitored against career goals, as well as guiding, assisting and holding students accountable in the achievement of those goals.
This is a is a full-time temporary/casual position.
Identify and address the levels of experience and preparedness of each student to determine career planning strategy, using assessment tools when necessary
Instruct in methods of career exploration and job and internship search
Identify and discuss career alternatives and assign tasks to encourage student career readiness self-efficacy
Develop, plan and implement programs and webinars designed to serve student career needs and outcomes. Draw from specialized knowledge of career advising and coaching to develop and lead seminars and to develop written resources
Formulate individualized plan of action for job seekers to include developing an effective resume/cover letter, developing interviewing skills through videotaped mock interviews and role playing, and designing job search strategies
Research and compile educational information from the internet, professional trade publications and journals, and government reports/studies to strengthen professional theoretical foundation, industry knowledge and to support existing as well as new programs
Participate as a team member in special events such as career fairs, open houses and orientations, some of which will occur on evening and weekends
Identify and secure guest speakers and moderate panels for academic and career programs
Research, create, and edit brochures, flyers, posters, video presentations, newsletters, and web content to promote office events and programs to all student populations
Promote career panels and seminars tailored to specific interest groups
Act as liaison between University and employers, parents, prospective students, current students, and alumni
Work in conjunction with Associate Director of Employer Relations to source and attract employers for student educational events and programs
Experience & Educational Background:
Master's Degree in counseling, psychology, education, human resources, or related major preferred
3-5 years of career development, advising, student personnel, human resources, or equivalent experience required
Experience working with both undergraduate and graduate level students and adult learners
Career advising, assessment, and demonstrable job search plan development expertise
Experience advising international students
Experience with pre-graduate school advising in a variety of disciplines
Knowledge of online resources and career development software
Expertise in career assessment tools, including the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory
Experience in adult career advising, program planning and delivery
Skills & Competencies:
Strong customer focus (ability to listen attentively to students and recruiters and to understand and respond positively to their requests) is required
Familiarity with technology that facilitates webinars and online platforms
Ability to work collaboratively on team projects with diverse individuals
Flexibility and willingness to work early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed
Strong project management skills, ability to multi task in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
An entrepreneurial orientation, proven track record of taking initiative and making things happen (i.e. self-starter)
Highly proficient with web-based resources, spreadsheet and presentation software required (MS Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel)
Assume responsibility to ensure issues/concerns will be addressed and monitor them through conclusion
Strong organizational work skills, defining tasks, prioritizing assignments, and following through on all projects independently, is able to articulate challenges and proposed solutions with ease
Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills
Ability to deal with a university population at all levels
