Salary/Rate: $45,833 - $50,416 Salary range is reflective of full time work for 10 months and part time work for 2 months
The Student Health and Wellness Center (SHWC) at Southern Oregon University promotes optimal health, prevention and well-being of students through quality educational, counseling and primary care services. These services are provided on campus, during daytime hours during the work week. Educational services are provided on evenings and weekends, and may also take place jointly with partner and other entities that serve the broader local community. Services are delivered in a setting and manner that facilitate the healing and learning processes, promote professionalism, represents the SHWC and SOU positively, and are supportive of the academic goals and programs of SOU.
The Health Promotions Specialist is responsible for program planning, implementation, and evaluation/assessment of health promotion/disease prevention programs for the campus. The Health Promotions Specialist coordinates and facilitates the development of campus-wide wellness programs that integrate academic learning, student development, environmental support, programming, and policies that foster individual, interpersonal and community health, social justice and inclusion.
Areas of responsibility include prevention, environmental intervention, outreach, health information marketing, mental health & health education. Assignments may change annually or more frequently in order to respond to campus health concerns and priorities.
The Health Promotions Specialist performs the duties as stated above in a collaborative team environment, contributing positive, constructive and professional interaction with all SHWC staff and the campus community, with the goal of providing an efficient and quality system of patient care and education.
This successful candidate for this position will utilize guidance from the American College Health Association Health Education Standards, the AAAHC Standards for Health Promotion, Council for Academic Standards (CAS) principles and other emerging evidence-based programs and best practices in college health. *This position is full time during the academic year (8/16-6/15), and part time for two summer months (6/16-8/15) *
Minimum Classification Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in health promotion, public health, health education, or related field.
Minimum of three years of health promotion and prevention work experience.
Master's or advanced degree in health promotion, public health, health education, or related field.
Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
Health promotion experience in a higher education setting.
Supervisory experience and skill.
Involvement in relevant professional associations (ACHA, APHA, NASPA, etc.).
Experience conducting needs assessments and using results to guide programmatic decisions.
Experience conducting program evaluations, interpreting findings and developing programmatic and strategic response to the findings.
All Listed Duties:
Prevention: Lead the development and implementation of prevention programs for SOU students. Work in collaboration and coordination with the Equity Grievance Director and other appropriate campus partners, i.e. Women's Resource Center, Queer Resource Center, Commuter Resource Center, Veterans Resource Office, Multicultural Resource Center, Recreation Department, Athletics, University Housing, Student Support and Intervention, and New Student Orientation. Additional tasks:
Work with Campus Public Safety to coordinate Clery reports and ensure compliance
Participate in the Violence Prevention Committee
Lead Peer educators in assisting with prevention
Develop Healthy Relationships program,
Health Promotions & Education: Responsible to design, implement, market, and evaluate a campus-wide approach to the prevention of health & mental health problems by coordinating strategies that reaches the entire student population. Responsible to develop new methodologies and strategies for health promotion activities, train staff and student leaders, consult on services and policies that affect health status. Will be an active collaborator with appropriate campus partners, such as, Women's Resource Center, Queer Resource Center, Commuter Resource Center, Veterans Resource Office, Multicultural Resource Center, Recreation Department, Athletics, University Housing, Student Support and Intervention, and New Student Orientation.
Develop & implement health education events & activities addressing a range of health topics including: mental health, alcohol & drugs, cancer, smoking cessation, world AIDS day, sexuality & relationships, eating disorders, sleep hygiene, men's health, suicide prevention, intimate partner violence, STIs, nutrition and body image, stress reduction and overall wellbeing. Activities include Health Fairs and Relaxation Extravaganza.
Presentations to RAs and housing residents on topics such as stress, anxiety, depression, self-care, suicide intervention, etc.
Develop and market culturally-relevant outreach projects that reflect environmental risk management strategies, including community networking, leadership training, classroom presentations, public information campaigns, and technological strategies, to prevent health problems, support academic success, and advocacy networks for SOU students and specifically to underserved populations.
Schedule and staff tabling events each term including required campus events
Develop promotional materials
Maintain and update SHWC website and social media platforms
Individual appointments to students: addresses healthy behavior change, including stress reduction, relationship, sexuality, food and exercise, and other wellness behaviors.,
Needs Assessments and Research:
Conduct needs assessments on health needs and health education needs of students, including gathering and analyzing data
Conduct formal research on prevalence of high risk behaviors, gathering and analyze data. Use data for development of campus-wide programming
Implement SHWC student satisfaction survey; compile and analyze data,
General SHWC Staff Responsibilities:
Responsible for staying current on all internal communication through attendance at meetings, reading minutes of missed meetings, and regular use of email
Responsible for knowing and complying with applicable internal and external policies, procedures, rules and regulations
Responsible for knowing and complying with the professional communications guidelines and expectations as set forth in the SHWC
Represents SHWC at SOU and other community, or regional events in a professional and positive manner as assigned
Participates on work teams as assigned
Quality Assurance: Performs all work in accordance with AAAHC accreditation standard and ACHA Health Education standards
Other duties as assigned
Special Instructions to Applicants:
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
