At the University of California San Diego, challenging convention is our most cherished tradition. Since its inception, UC San Diego has been shaped by exceptional scholars who aren't afraid to take risks and redefine conventional wisdom. In our short history, through sheer determination and a relentless pursuit for groundbreaking discovery, UC San Diego has earned recognition as one of the world's premier research universities and one of the top-10 public universities in the nation. Washington Monthly has consistently ranked UC San Diego as the top public university for positive impact on the nation.
Launched publicly in March 2017, the Campaign for UC San Diego is the most ambitious fundraising effort in our history: a $2 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign to transform the student experience, our campus, and ultimately the world. Private support is necessary to help us continue to drive innovation, advance society, propel economic growth, and, ultimately, solve the world's most pressing problems. UC San Diego Advancement's University Development department is the frontline-fundraising team responsible for supporting General Campus and Scripps Institution of Oceanography leadership in securing philanthropic resources that advance opportunity for their students, faculty and initiatives.
Our founders established an experimental campus, and the Division of Biological Sciences is at the very heart of that nontradition. Consistently ranked as one of the top biology programs in the world, our division seeks to fund people with potential; support emerging research in an array of fields, from understanding how ecosystems respond to climate change, to using genetics to understand the human brain and combat infectious disease. We communicate our work to the communities we serve, expanding science education, appreciation, and engagement, and we translate our fundamental discoveries into innovations to improve the environment, agriculture and human health.
Our students, faculty, and staff push technical boundaries every day, sparking novel scientific discoveries that reshape our view of the biological world. Our research and educational efforts are divided into four sub-disciplines including biochemistry and biophysics; cell biology and developmental biology; ecology, behavior, and evolution; genetics and molecular biology; immunology, virology, and cancer biology; neurobiology; and plant molecular biology. Our faculty and students in these disciplines contribute their foundational expertise to collaborations with faculty campus wide, including SIO and Health Sciences, and more recently with those in Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities via the newly founded Institute for Practical Ethics. Opening doors to new eras in science means investing in opportunities for access, collaboration, and nonstop discovery.
University Development recognizes the crucial role development professionals play in identifying, engaging, cultivating and stewarding the philanthropic partners capable of assuring this university's brightest future. Our leadership works tenaciously to seek out development professionals at all stages of their careers who evince the passion and integrity representative of our university's character. Once part of the University Development team, colleagues are celebrated for their accomplishments and offered the support necessary to identify and realize ambitious goals. We place a premium on collaboration and shared endeavor, recognizing that true philanthropic success is measured best by the long-term advancement of UC San Diego and the impact of its work.
Under the leadership of the Associate Vice Chancellor for University Development, the Director of Development (DOD) will be a frontline fundraiser responsible for leading major gift strategies from identification through stewardship. Directors of Development manage an individual portfolio of prospects capable of giving major gifts in excess of $100,000. Directors possess a comprehensive understanding of university priorities, regularly meeting with prospects and donors (with a focus on face-to-face visits), regularly meeting with development colleagues and academic leaders, preparing briefing materials and gift proposals, attending events and staffing and/or supervising projects as assigned.
