The Ocean Sciences Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Ocean Modeling Specialist under the direction of Christopher Edwards. The Ocean Modeling Specialist will support ongoing research efforts focused on regional modeling and data assimilation in the California Current System and other areas. Our group develops and analyzes numerical models and data assimilation capabilities representing ocean circulation, sometimes coupled with biogeochemical processes. Support activities include refining existing models, analyzing model output to assess model fidelity and better understand ocean processes, and developing scripting algorithms to allow smooth operation of near real-time systems.
Applicants with expertise in physical oceanography, marine biogeochemistry, or numerical modeling and who possess a strong mathematical foundation and experience using scientific computing environments, such as Matlab, Python, or Julia, are strongly encouraged to apply.
ACADEMIC TITLE Assistant Specialist
SALARY Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS A Master's Degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in oceanography, physics, mathematics, computer science or a related discipline at the time of application; or a Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in oceanography, physics, mathematics, computer science or a related discipline and a minimum of two years' post baccalaureate research experience at the time of application.

DURATION OF POSITION Initial appointment will be full-time for one year. Reappointment is contingent upon the availability of funding. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted.
