We are seeking to fill a laboratory manager position to aid in establishing the laboratory for the new Department of Neurology Chair, Dr. Gwenn Garden. The position requires administrative duties for purchasing equipment and supplies, establishing environmental health and safety protocols, maintaining and organizing human samples and a mouse colony including independently handling animal protocols that are required for the UNC Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval. Laboratory procedures performed will include : 1) mouse handling, breeding and genotyping; 2) mouse brain preparation for dissociation or tissue sectioning; 3) immuno-labeling cells and tissue sections for microscopic analysis; 4) flow cytometry and fluorescence activated cell sorting; 5) RNA extraction, PCR and sequencing; 6) nuclei isolation from sorted cells for epigenetic analysis. This position will require two- or three-week trainings over the period of 3-4 months at the University of Washington and assistance with packing, moving and setting up the new lab at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Basic understanding of microscopy, histology and tissue handling. Prior experience and competency in cell and molecular biology, handling mice in a research setting including colony management and genotyping. General knowledge of applicable area of science to perform laboratory procedures and tests in support of research protocol.
The preferred candidate will have some experience or education in the field of neuroscience. Must have strong communication skills, be well organized and uses good research practices. Strong ability to work independently and leadership skills are highly desired.
