The Government Performance Lab (GPL) at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) conducts research on how governments can improve the results they achieve for their citizens and make more rapid progress in addressing challenging social problems. An important part of this research model involves providing technical assistance to state and local governments—we hire and train full-time fellows, embedding them in government agencies to collaborate closely with government innovators in leading intensive reform projects. Most of these projects are focused on difficult social problems such as homelessness, the opioid crisis, child poverty, joblessness, criminal recidivism, among many others. By supporting government agencies in this important work, we improve how governments function and how services are delivered, speed up progress on difficult social problems, and ultimately make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable people across the United States. To date, the GPL has engaged in 96 projects with 67 jurisdictions spread across 31 states. We are a team of 40, the majority of whom are embedded in governments around the country providing technical assistance.
The GPL Executive Coordinator will provide high-level administrative support to the GPL's Director and serve as chief of staff to the organization's leadership team. The Executive Coordinator role has four main components. First, the Executive Coordinator will provide administrative support to the director, handling scheduling, answering the phone, drafting and proof-reading documents, making photocopies, and scanning and electronically filing documents, among other responsibilities. Second, the Executive Coordinator will maximize the productivity of the director by managing and making strategic decisions about the allocation of his time, making sure information flows in both directions between the director and GPL staff, and handling relationships with many other parts of HKS and outside organizations. Third, the Executive Coordinator will serve as chief of staff to the GPL's leadership team, attending most leadership team meetings, working with the point person for each meeting to develop the agenda for the meeting and ensure pre-meeting materials are prepared and distributed and follow-up items get done. Fourth, as the Director is also the Malcolm Wiener Professor of Public Policy, the Executive Coordinator will serve as the Director's faculty assistant, interacting with students and helping to prepare course materials and support other teaching and research related needs. The Executive Coordinator will work closely with the GPL's Director of Operations and GPL's three program directors in maximizing the organization's impact and effectiveness.
