The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR)/Department of Anesthesiology Research at the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine is searching for Laboratory Research Specialist . This individual will be responsible for performing research activities in a highly collaborative environment to achieve research project goals by
performing laboratory experiments, analyzing data, writing reports, presenting results. The goals of the Department of Anesthesiology Research Laboratory are to conduct federal funded state-of-the-art research projects in the areas of cardiopulmonary vascular research.
***This is a Full-Time, Contractual Position***

Perform in vitro cell experiments and in vivo animal (rodents) experiments. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications.
Perform laboratory research activities such as breeding genetically modified mouse, quantitative PCR (qPCR) and immunoblot analysis; immunohistochemical analysis; tissue processing from rodents, data analysis and interpretation; isolating primary lung vascular cells and/or bone marrow cells from rodents; human cell culture and preparation, cell functional studies and analysis.
Administer day-to-day laboratory operations including ensuring quality control, safety compliance, and ordering supplies. Maintain proper operation of research equipment, ensuring proper operation records, cleaning, ordering of required components and explaining/resolving technical issues.
Participates in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication. Reports data in the lab meetings.
Assisting to prepare materials for research studies, including sample collection kits and research documents.
Assist in the training of undergraduate and graduate students, fellows, and/or junior technical personnel in the performance of a variety of laboratory techniques.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology or in a field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in laboratory research including two (2) years in research specialization.
Other: Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.
May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
* Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the laboratory, or Bachelor's degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research laboratory. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Possesses a skill in animal handling and cell culture techniques.
Possess a skill in advanced data analysis such as using statistical and graph software. Ability to conduct library research and participate in the preparation of data.
Ability to troubleshoot for the area of technical specialty.
Ability to effectively communicate.
Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.
