Job Description Summary
This nurse will provide patient care to Hemodialysis veterinary patients as well as all extracorporeal type cases. This nurse will also be the main coordinator for the entire service.
**Flexibility with hours (earlier start time or later end time may be needed occasionally based on service schedule and emergency cases)
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Client and referring veterinarian communication via email and phoneÂ
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Communication and coordination with other services (nurse, clinicians and students) within Penn Vet regarding presenting complaint, diagnostics performed and projected plan of care
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Unit maintenance including managing maintenance contracts, organization, and inventory (Eventually this will include performing routine machine maintenance and keeping all necessary equipment in clean and working order)
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Technical procedures such as patient support and monitoring during treatment, long and short-term intravenous catheter placement, drug administration, sedation and monitoring, blood transfusion administration and monitoring
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Provide surgical assistance for the placement of long-term hemodialysis catheters
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Manage charging for all ECT procedures and treatments
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Provide excellent patient care by applying full knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, specialized equipment usage, and specialized drug administration
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Prepare and assist with complex procedures including hemodialysis, hemoperfusion, plasmapheresis, ECG monitoring and interpretation, emergency CPCR, venous and arterial cut down, and various other routine and emergency diagnostic testing and procedures
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Responsible for supervising, coaching, teaching and orienting students, interns and residents regarding excellent patient care and technical procedures
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Record a variety of data relating to patient care and treatments and service related communications
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Maintain a clean working environment to ensure infectious disease standards are followed and infection is not spread
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Work in ICU when no treatments or procedures are being done in dialysis and all departmental maintenance is complete
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Must be a Certified Veterinary Technician
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Vet Tech C requires 3-4 years experience, Vet Tech D requires 5-7 years experience, Vet Tech E requires 7+ years experience
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Emergency and Critical Care experience preferred
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Must be able to conduct yourself in a composed and professional manner, especially under pressure
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Dedication and desire to have an active and essential role in the growth and development of the dialysis service
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Ability to multi-task while paying close attention to detail
Â·Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment, while demonstrating a high level of initiative and motivation

Job requires standing for prolonged periods of time. Lifting 25-50 pounds routinely. Bending and crouching are often required when working with animals. Working environment can be loud at times with barking dogs and equipment alarms.
