Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a world renowned scientific research organization, has an immediate opening for a Desktop Support Technician in the Information Technology department.
The Desktop Support Technician will maintain, analyze, troubleshoot and repair desktop/laptop systems, install system hardware and software and computer peripherals (printers, scanners, etc.), and create procedural and support specific documentation for the group. Additionally, he or she will work with roaming user profiles, ACL permissions, and will work and maintain computer and user accounts. This individual will work under the general supervision of the Desktop Support Manager and will perform additional IT related tasks, as assigned by management.
Education: A High School degree or equivalent is required. A degree or certificate in computer science or a related field preferred. MCP or higher certifications very beneficial.
Experience: - 4 – 6 years previous experience in customer support, computer operations, desktop support or another related area.
Required Skills: - Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of writing purchase justifications, making presentations to an internal audience, and interacting positively with management. - Independent problem-solving, self-direction. - Strong documentation skills. - In-depth understanding of desktop operating systems and the commands/utilities available. - Familiar with advanced troubleshooting techniques. - In depth knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory (AD) and networking concepts such as TCP/IP, DHCP and DNS. - Capable of training users in common applications and operating system fundamentals. - Capable of software installations through MSI deployment.
Preferred Skills: - Knowledge of PowerShell, windows command line interface, batch files, Visual Basic and scripting. - Knowledge of multiple operating systems (Linux, Mac OS, Windows 7/8/10) highly desirable.
