Department: BODEGA MARINE LABORATORY - 061805 Department Description: Bodega Marine Laboratory (BML) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the University of California, Davis. Located in Bodega Bay, BML and its surrounding 362-acre Reserve provides research and instructional facilities for resident and campus-based faculty, researchers and students. About 100 scientists maintain active research and teaching programs, more than 50 graduate students conduct research on the site, and there are about 50 employees under a variety of policies and collective bargaining agreements. In addition, the Laboratory hosts many US and international visiting scientists, and hosts conferences and retreats. Bodega Marine Laboratory (BML) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the University of California, Davis. Primary research emphasis is on oceanographic influences on marine populations; coastal atmospheric chemistry; marine ecology and impacts of non-native species; responses of marine organisms to environmental stress; fish ecology, conservation and restoration; and coastal terrestrial ecology.

Job Summary: Under supervision of the White Abalone Captive Breeding Program Director, will lead animal care/facilities maintenance for BML's White Abalone Captive Breeding Program. General responsibilities include white abalone husbandry, including feeding, tank cleaning, and assessment; as well as maintaining animal life support systems, including filters, pumps, plumbing, UV units, and other equipment. Responsibilities also include assisting with spawning broodstock and culturing larvae, collecting and culturing algae, managing data and experiments, and purchasing supplies and managing equipment.

Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in marine biology, marine science, conservation, or a related field.
- Proficiency swimming and freediving in local, nearshore water.
- Experience caring for captive aquatic animals.
- Experience working in a laboratory setting.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Experience working independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). - Proficiency in both written and verbal English.
Preferred Qualifications: - Experience maintaining captive abalone in both aquaculture and research settings.
- Experience working with endangered species.
- Knowledge of seawater plumbing and life support.
- Experience culturing diatoms and macroalgae.
- Knowledge of local seaweeds and collection locations.
