The primary purpose of the Student Services Specialist is to manage all curriculum elements (i.e., course submission, scheduling, registration) for the first-year requirements in the new General Education curriculum, titled “IDEAs in Action”. First, this position will develop, implement, and oversee all curriculum processes for a brand new type of course at UNC-Chapel Hill. “Ideas, Information, and Inquiry” courses (or III for short) are large (typically 250 students), four-credit, broadly interdisciplinary courses that introduce students to a wide range of academic subject areas. They are taught by teams of three faculty members whose disciplinary, research, and/or scholarly approaches differ significantly from one another.
Courses are organized around a broad theme that highlights the different approaches among the teaching team. Second, this position will oversee scheduling and registration for the First-Year Seminar (FYS) and First Year Launch (FYL) Program. FYS and FYL are small classes (maximum 35 students), taught by full-time faculty, and offer an introduction to the intellectual life of the University by focusing on how scholars pose problems, discover truths, resolve controversies, and evaluate knowledge. Third, this position will direct the pre-registration (block enrollment) process for first-year students during the fall and spring semesters. This involves coordination with multiple offices and personnel, including the Academic Advising Program, the Office of the University Registrar, Office of Arts & Sciences Information Services (OASIS), Undergraduate Admissions, New Student and Parent Programs, School of Education, and the Department of English and Comparative Literature. The block enrollment process includes four (4) required courses in the first-year: FYS/FYL,(described above), III (described above), College Thriving (EDUC 101), and Writing at the Research University (ENGL 105). Lastly, this position will also serve as the office registrar for all IDST and SPCL courses, support the Course Evaluation Coordinator during the End of Course Evaluations process for students, and provide additional office support.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
The Student Services Specialist position requires a high level of attention to detail and professionalism. Excellent customer service and problem solving skills are a must. The selected candidate will have excellent organizational skills, strong written and oral communication skills, the ability to work well with others and work as part of a team, and the demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks. Skill in working independently is also essential. Must be proficient in Microsoft products, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
Ability to use PeopleSoft/Connect Carolina is preferred.
Two years (or more) of experience in higher education (e.g., academic affairs or student affairs) is also highly desirable.
