The Associate Director of Communications and Engagement will be a creative, collaborative, experienced, and energetic communications professional who will support communications and engagement strategy and initiatives for Harvard College and its departments. Reporting to the Director of Communications and Engagement, the newly created Associate Director role will operationalize communications and engagement strategy incorporating evolving best practices, with responsibility for day-to-day activities and deliverables. A key component of this position will be to strengthen engagement with constituencies across the College and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, including students, faculty and staff; whose involvement and support are critical components for success in the implementation of a range of communications approaches. This position will work closely with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Harvard College colleagues on implementing best-in-class features/functionality to achieve communications goals and ensure that Harvard College's communications presence across platforms remains cutting-edge, responsive, and nimble.
Major areas of responsibility include:
Organize and operationalize day-to-day communications activities and innovative content approaches to support Harvard College and all of its departments; including writing and editorial support as well as communications guidance
Participate in the development of key messages and strategies to communicate complex information to multiple audiences and constituencies using traditional, new, and emerging communications tools, with a particular focus on digital platforms and mobile applications
Craft content calendars and various communication campaigns defining dissemination opportunities based on desired audience, executing developed plans, ensuring adherence to milestones and deliverables
Identify, develop, and implement best practices of consistency and integration across channels and functional areas of the College, including online, social, print and in person
Work collaboratively to write, edit, and/or review content for reports, newsletters and other materials related to designated programs, projects, events; and to ensure consistent messaging for programs as needed
Advance efficient and effective means of proactively communicating the visual and verbal identity of Harvard College to key internal and external audiences
In conjunction with the College communications team, ensure best practices in utilizing analytics and other measurement tools to assess the impact of messaging, platforms, and overall strategy; as well as sharing assessment information regularly with stakeholders
Represent College communications to stakeholders as needed; may be required to prepare materials for, participate in, and document meetings with students, faculty, staff and/or senior administrators
Lead and attend team and departmental meetings regularly to stay informed of activities and progress
Potentially supervise student workers, staff assistants, coordinators, or other project managers depending on experience and as program requires over time
Contributes to the overarching communication and engagement goals by accomplishing related duties as required
The ideal candidate will have a proven record of accomplishment within a complex environment, with excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills. S/he should have experience as an operational manager who can build on existing strengths and develop new approaches when needed through action-oriented, coordinated, consistent yet flexible, and innovative approaches. The Associate Director must be self-motivated and resourceful with the ability to work independently while establishing strong, collaborative team relationships. S/he should be analytical with solid problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a customer-service orientation. The successful candidate must have the ability to exercise good judgment on a range of issues, many of which are confidential in nature, and to manage complex projects through to completion. S/he will thrive in a fast-paced, idea-driven, creative environment; acting as a catalyst and amplifier to accomplish communications and engagement goals for Harvard College.

Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or related field
7+ years of experience in communications/marketing/engagement
Management experience directing, managing, mentoring, and developing individuals
At least 3 years of project management experience
Experience creating and executing communications strategies
Experience with a wide variety of communications approaches and platforms, including print, social media, multimedia, digital, and mobile
Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with diverse, high-level constituencies
Impeccable attention to detail and experience with proofreading and fact- checking
Highly motivated, with superior organizational and written communication skills, including excellent editorial judgment
Forward-thinking attitude and vision
Experience in higher education setting is preferable, but not required
Computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook
Flexibility to work occasional extra hours, including evenings and weekends, to maintain channels, be responsive to users, meet deadlines and address emergencies
