Current electronic health records require the user to click around many screens and may not fit the clinician users' ways of thinking, workflow, and other contexts or needs. We use a different system, which provides a drag/drop platform that allows clinicians (doctors and nurses) to create their own interfaces and tools . This has the possibility of reducing errors and other safety risks present in the current approach. We are exploring the cognitive, efficiency, and system design aspects of approach with a view to design improvements. Our lab is international and includes experts in health IT safety and usability.
Another part of our research agenda is in mobile health applications, particularly for underserved, minority or otherwise atypical patient populations, and providers.
Job description Position available for Postdoc or advanced PhD student to assist with research exploring interaction design aspects of health IT safety, usability, and fit to task. We are seeking independent minded self-starting creative scientists who will come up with research ideas, assist in user studies with doctors and nurses at major academic medical centers and online, explore interaction design improvements (in collaboration with UI designers and others on the team) and initiate and carry out other academic activities such as paper writing and online research. We will consider a non-PhD research assistant with suitable research background and experience. Web programming experience is a plus. Publications and attendance at national and international academic conferences are supported. PhD level applicants will be assisted with stage-appropriate career development such as eventually applying for a K award and other grant applications.
The immediate project involves carrying out in-person and online usability testing, including thinkaloud studies with clinicians.
The ideal applicants should have training in biomedical informatics, human-computer interaction/cognition/usability, and mixed methods, or related areas, and with an interest in health IT and patient safety, electronic health records , interaction design, cognitive science . Candidate must be a self-starter with excellent organizational, writing, and remote work skills, as PI and some other collaborators will be in other locations some of the time. Experience with federal grants is a plus.
Education & Qualifications:
PhD in biomedical informatics (will consider others with good qualifications), cognitive psychology, Industrial and Systems Engineering or related field with a research focus in Human Factors in Health Care (particularly in the areas of Interaction design, Patient Safety and/or Health Information Technologies).
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in research projects
Willingness and ability to initiate and lead their own research projects/grant applications; publish extensively in high quality peer-reviewed journals. An independent minded creative person is ideal.
Ability to balance and prioritize tasks, and delivers timely outcomes
Effective team management and communication skills.
Excellent technical skills, problem solving skills and writing skills
Good understanding of UI and interaction design and the research processes and methodologies including qualitative and quantitative research methods. Strong interest in conducting laboratory and field research in health care environments.
Duties and Responsibilities
Managing and performing data collection activities, writing and obtaining IRB approvals
Conducting literature review and summarizing findings; carrying out online research on various topics
Analyzing qualitative and quantitative data
Participating in lab meetings, sometimes supervising others such as temporary student assistants, communicating updates on various meetings and projects to lab director
Authoring/co-authoring review and research manuscripts; editing papers or other documents
Help with writing grant proposals, lead writing career grants (if interested and applicable)
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic understanding of healthcare systems
Experience in reviewing literature using common databases, and use of reference software such as Endnote.
Experience in data collection protocols, IRB process.
Experience in qualitative analysis.
Experience in questionnaire design and statistical data analysis
Experience in usability testing highly desirable
