The Department of Pediatrics at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University, is seeking a full-time board eligible/board certified pediatric intensivist to join five full-time pediatric intensivists in staffing a 12-bed multidisciplinary PICU and help augment a rapidly expanding pediatric sedation service, currently staffed by one full-time pediatric critical care physician. In addition to critical medical care, this position is heavily involved in teaching. Pediatric, internal medicine-pediatric and emergency medicine residents participate in learning and inpatient care in the PICU and on the sedation service on a rotating basis. Five PICU trained acute care pediatric nurse practitioners help staff the PICU and provide pediatric sedation. Annual PICU admissions are 700 – 800 and are rising; the sedation service provides sedation to over 1200 outpatient and inpatient encounters per year. An interest in teaching, clinical research and pediatric sedation is desirable.
The PICU is an integral part of a rapidly growing Children’s Hospital, which is part of a Level 1 Trauma Center with a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department. The Maynard Children’s Hospital includes a day medical and sedation center as well as a pediatric hematology/oncology unit and a 21 bed special care nursery.
The PICU both supports and is supported by a broad range of sub-specialty medical and surgical services, including but not limited to pediatric surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, and pediatric anesthesia.
