This position reports to the Research Integrity Officer (RIO) in the UM Office of Research (UMOR). The RIO oversees reviews of allegations of research misconduct in accordance with University of Michigan (U-M) and federal policies, as well as compliance with federal regulations related to responsible conduct of research (RCR) training.
The Assistant Director will act as a project manager to work with U-M schools and colleges on all three campuses to ensure that RCR requirements are being met and effectively tracked. The Assistant RIO will also assist the RIO and other research integrity staff with research misconduct cases and policy and procedure development.
Under supervision of the Research Integrity Officer, the Assistant Director will:
Serve as the primary point of contact for RCR training oversight, including planning and implementation of outreach and training initiatives for promoting research integrity and responsible conduct of research with schools and colleges;
Assist with assessment of allegations of misconduct, including identification of the specifics of the allegation of research misconduct in as much detail as possible, and determination of when the allegations warrant further inquiry; establishment of the claimant, respondent, and witness identities where possible;
If an inquiry is warranted, assist with management of research misconduct inquiries: including conducting structured interviews with claimant, respondent, and witnesses; coordinating evidence sequestration; conducting forensic analyses of evidence including but not limited to plagiarism screening and image analysis; conducting literature, web, and data searches as needed; identifying and ordering evidentiary documents from libraries or electronic resources as needed; helping to identify subject matter experts; providing administrative support to the committee; and drafting the inquiry report for the RIO to share with the Vice President for Research (VPR);
If the VPR determines an investigation is warranted, assist with drafting correspondence to Federal authorities as needed and managing the research misconduct investigation by providing administrative support to the committee; coordinating the research misconduct investigations with the OGC and other University offices as needed; helping to identify potential committee members free from conflicts of interest; assembling all the necessary evidence for the committee; drafting notices and charge letters; and managing interviews, recordings, and correspondence;
Assist with maintaining status reports on each case for bi-weekly reports to the Associate VPR and monthly reports to the VPR.
Assist with developing and updating policies and procedures and drafting new guidance, as needed;
Participate in regional and national meetings for Research Integrity Officers and RCR coordinators to maintain up-to-date knowledge on emerging trends in research integrity and apply the knowledge to the office’s activities.
PhD, JD, or equivalent degree
Five+ years experience in a higher education setting related to research compliance and/or administration
Experience working on research integrity and/or ethics matters
Self-motivation, initiative, and broad thinking
Effective project planning and project management skills with ability to meet deadlines and prioritize multiple tasks
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and ability to interact with process owners and senior level management, faculty and staff across the University at a variety of levels and positions
Demonstrated skills using computer applications for data retrieval and analysis, including Excel, Adobe PhotoShop, and Adobe Illustrator
Experience with investigative or forensic techniques
Excellent problem-solving capabilities and project management skills
Ability to perform well under stress
Ability to work well independently and also contribute to team efforts
Knowledge and experience of research in an academic setting
Authorship of scholarly publications
Knowledge of Federal research misconduct investigation procedures
