The Assistant Director (AD) is a key role within the Global Support team. The AD through collaboration, investigation and outreach will help support the Universitys efforts to ensure the successful academic and personal experience of all international students at Boston University. Directly reporting to the Managing Director for Strategy and Communications, the Assistant Director for International Student Initiatives will partner with academic and administrative units on the Charles River and Medical Campuses, particularly the ISSO and help coordinate daily outreach efforts for international students at Boston University.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
Collaborates with the Orientation Office, Residence Life, ISSO, CELOP and other groups to help design and deliver pre arrival orientation programs to help oEase the transition to the US and Boston University oIntroduce the US and BU classroom experience oExpand and manage an international student mentoring program.
Works with the Dean of Students Office as well as individual schools on MED and CRC campuses to create opportunities for greater interaction and connections among international and domestic students, both academically and socially. Counsels and supports international students in connecting them to appropriate services on their campus (ISSO, ERC, SHS/BM, CELOP, University Chaplain for International Students, etc.).Act as a lead cultural mentor on campus. Works with the various advising offices on campus to help facilitate cultural sensitivity and cultural mentoring.
Develops online library of resources for faculty and staff containing among other things: information on educational and cultural values and norms from countries of origin of our students, intercultural development, and support resources on campus for international students. Promotes dialogues and conversation around campus relating to intercultural and multicultural issues.
Identifies and recommends best practices for improving international student experience on campus. Develops measurement tools to gauge success of initiatives and student success and provides monthly reports on international student initiatives to University leadership.
Works with Study Abroad office on strategies to increase number of international students choosing to do study abroad.
Collaborates on other activities and events associated with international student initiatives as directed.
BA/BS required, Graduate degree preferred
5 - 8 years of professional experience in fast paced operational environment; working with international students preferred
Excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills
Ability to work cooperatively with senior administrators, faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students
Intercultural training and experience required
