The Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is seeking a Research Specialist.
Our research uses small animal models to investigate the mechanisms of immune rejection of transplanted organs. We are looking for a highly motivated, organized, fast learning, and responsible person who is able to work both independently and as part of a team. The candidate will coordinate and execute in vitro and in vivo (in mice) cellular and molecular immunological studies, and collect, analyze, and interpret data.
In addition, the candidate will genotype and phenotype (by PCR and flow cytometry), maintain, and keep records of mouse colonies and perform and assist in mouse surgeries and intravital microscopy as well as cryo-sectioning and immunofluorescence for histology. The candidate will also be placing orders and maintaining inventory for the laboratory.
This individual is expected to assist with manuscript/grant preparation and technical protocol writing. Strong organizational skills and exceptional interpersonal skills are a must, as the candidate will directly interact with the Principal Investigator, colleagues, and other collaborating researchers. The individual will also be responsible for ensuring that the lab complies with all EH&S requirements. Necessary laboratory skills and experience include small animal handling, surgical skills, sterile cell culture techniques, and proficiency in flow cytometry. An understanding of immunological concepts is an advantage. A Bachelor's Degree in biological sciences or a related field, with a minimum of 2 years of experience in research is required. The candidate is expected to be an enthusiastic contributor to our research program.
