Job Description Summary
This position will lead a team of programmers and data scientists for biomedical research projects and infrastructure development to support a broad range of cross institutional projects for the Institute for Biomedical Informatics.
Project Management: - 40%
Set short and long term project priorities for the team. Collaborate with research/principal investigators, study coordinators, staff programmers, and project data scientists to develop specifications for proposed computer programs. Lead research support team in brainstorming sessions to design appropriate solutions; advise on the technical feasibility and cost effectiveness of proposed approaches. Confers with researchers to determine computational hardware and software needs.
Tracks and provides updates on progress toward computer programming and analysis projects. Collaborated with senior researches in determining approaches to data processing, long range planning, and defining and solving data management problems.
Team Management: 40%
Oversees all aspects of the programming teams work on behalf of the Director. Recruits, hires, trains and manages a team of programmers including both senior and junior staff members. Forecasts project workload and staffing needs to ensure that resources are appropriate to meet current and future demands. Designs operational plans to implement informatics and analysis components of research projects, and delegates work among the project specific teams. Provides technical direction to staff as needed. Facilitates acquisition of computing hardware and software.
Programming and Analysis - 15%
Analyzes programming/software problems in terms of system analysis, data management, and data analysis requirements. Devises programs for data entry, data verification methods, and standard system procedures. Retrieves and manipulates statistical data. Analyzes data from databases. Provides tables/charts of statistical results. Shapes data to meet expressed analysis needs of researchers; creates analysis files.
Professional Development: 5%
Keeps abreast of technological advances in available software/hardware for data base management and statistical analysis. Develops appropriate training courses to communicate advances locally. Attends training sessions on statistical packages, data base managers, and operating systems. Advises and consults on the choice/implementation of solutions to hardware/software needs, providing input and recommendations regarding computing requirements.
MS Degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Bioinformatics, or equivalent.
PhD Degree Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Bioinformatics, or equivalent preferred
5-7 Plus years of experience in computer programming and data management, preferably in management of biomedical data bases for large experimental/clinical studies or the equivalent
5-7 years of project management experience
Demonstrated supervisory experience
Advanced knowledge of UNIX, database management, client server technology and high performance computing is required
Knowledge of R and/or SAS is highly desirable
Knowledge of data visualization methods is highly desirable
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative skills
Able to work and communicate effectively with a diverse audience including researchers, project support staff and programmers
Ability to lead and manage a team of IT Professionals
