Research Support - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The position provides essential services and support to the veterinary technicians and veterinarians within the Animal Care Facility at Brown. These may include assisting with:
Clinical and research procedures: setting up for animal procedures, preparing surgical packs, transporting animals, observing animals, maintaining procedure areas in good condition, providing laundry services, assisting with packing animals for exportation.
Health monitoring and well-being programs: performing rounds in multiple facilities, observing health status of multiple species and recording findings for vet techs, stocking enrichment devices in multiple locations, preparing and administering enrichment schedules, administering medications, vaccinations, and treatments, collecting lab samples.
Other routine and ad hoc compliance and regulatory matters as directed: Perform census, tag chemicals, assist with paperwork relating to compliance documentation.
This position requires:
the ability to adapt to changes that occur with short notice.
the use of personal protective equipment, e.g. masks, shoe covers, eye protection, hair bonnets, and disposable coveralls as needed.
being able to position self to maintain equipment in labs and housing rooms.
being able to move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds within building, using carts and other transport equipment as needed.
frequent communication with researchers.Â The person in this position must be able to exchange accurate information regarding animal matters.
moving about between rooms and buildings.
Associateâ™s Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, or related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
1-2 years of experience as a lab technician, veterinary assistant, or similar position in a research or veterinary clinic environment.Â
1.Â Â Preferred:Â AALAS certification (ALAT, LAT or LATG) or Veterinary Assistant certificate from a NAVTA/AVA approved program.
Direct related experience with research animals.
Veterinary or Lab Technician experience.
Ability to recognize normal and abnormal behavior in a variety of animal species.
Good attention to detail.
Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with all levels of University personnel.
Basic computer skills.
Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community
