Westchester Community College was founded in 1946 as the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in White Plains. In 1957, the County of Westchester bought the 360-acre John Hartford estate in Valhalla and designated 218 acres for the community college. The Westchester Community College Mount Vernon Extension Center seeks a Secretary I (WP) to perform secretarial and word-processing services, relieving superiors of administrative details. The incumbent performs a variety of complex word processing, office support and clerical tasks. Independent action is exercised when routine procedures or clearly defined policies are involved. The incumbent will also perform a wide variety of tasks in providing customer service for students (entering forms, processing payments, helping students to register for classes, etc.), clerical and faculty support, and front office reception, to include answering telephone calls and assisting customers with inquiries regarding college business. When necessary, the incumbent will be responsible for arranging appointments, scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements, and supporting the maintenance of departmental files, records, and mailing lists. S/he will expedite related work, as required.
The hourly rate of pay is $12.75 per hour. No benefits.

Possession of a high school or equivalency diploma and four years of experience where the primary function of the position was the performance of clerical functions, two years of which involved the use of word processing and other automated systems. This position requires a full range of keyboarding skills in Microsoft Office and PeopleSoft systems. When operating word processing equipment, the incumbent is expected to maximize equipment capability in compiling correspondence, records, reports statistical information for various reports; setting up and maintaining automated records and filing systems, and in compiling information for management needs. A high degree of initiative and independent action is required to ensure the timely and accurate processing of the workflow. The successful candidate must be customer-service oriented and have the ability to work with a diverse student body, faculty and staff. Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
