The Physician Extender (PE) works in a highly specialized area of practice in the evaluation and intervention for allegedly abused and neglected children. Utilizes in-depth knowledge to ensure comprehensive assessment and thorough recommendations for those who are responsible for the health and safety of maltreated children. Evaluates complex dynamics associated with child sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect cases, and completes detailed, comprehensive written reports to address the physical, social, cognitive and emotional needs of patients and their caregivers. The PE works with an inter-disciplinary team including co-workers (Social Workers, Child and Family Advocates, MDT Coordinator) as well as referring professionals (DSS and LE investigators) during the onsite evaluation to ensure that system responses and recommendations address and promote the further protection, health, and wellness of children who are evaluated. Works closely with TEDIBEARCAC pediatricians and other medical professionals to evaluate children admitted to the Vidant Children's Hospital with concerns of maltreatment. Provide weekend on-call services for hospital cases (primarily phone consultation) approximately 1 weekend per month. Provide support to pediatric primary care clinic one half day each week. Requires expert testimony in criminal and civil court proceedings.

Graduation from a physician assistant program approved by the N.C. Board of Medical Examiners and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or licensed as a registered nurse by the Board of Nursing and graduation from a nurse practitioner program approved by the N.C. Joint Subcommittee, and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Organizational Unit Overview:
The Department of Pediatrics is an academic, clinical unit within East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine. The departmental objectives include teaching medical students and residents; providing exemplary medical care for children; improving the system of health care delivery for the children of Eastern North Carolina and performing appropriate pediatric research.
The Division of General Pediatrics is the largest division within the Department of Pediatrics. The responsibilities of the division include the provision of medical care to infants and children in the newborn nursery, ward, and clinic; administrative and teaching responsibility for medical students and residents; providing adolescent medical clinical services; providing health care services in regional health departments; providing health care to chronically ill children in a chronic care facility; and development of regional health care services for children of the area through the Community Care Plan.
The TEDIBEAR Children's Advocacy Center is a component of the Department of Pediatrics, Division of General Pediatrics, who provides education, evaluation, interventions, treatment, and system coordination in the area of child maltreatment. As the largest Children's Advocacy Center in North Carolina, children from the eastern NC region are provided comprehensive evaluation following concerns of abused and/or neglect. The center provides and educational resource for Eastern North Carolina professionals involved in the investigation and evaluation of child abuse and neglect. TEDIBEARCAC was established in 1992, and continues to expand programming in efforts to provide direct services to victims of child abuse and neglect, but also in educational efforts to prevent child maltreatment, train professionals and students in the field, and ensure collaborative, child-centered, and coordinated systems responsible for the protection of children.
