The primary purpose of the Physician Extender I is to help provide medical care to patients being treated in the various clinical sites of the Department of Family Medicine, ECU School of Medicine. This involves performing a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under the supervision of a licensed physician employed by the ECU School of Medicine. The Physician Extender I is responsible for diagnosis, treatment and management of the patient's acute or chronic healthcare problems. Treatment is performed on an outpatient basis at several Family Medicine Clinical Sites.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Graduation from a physician assistant program approved by the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners; or graduation from a Nurse Practitioner Program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee and licensed by the NC Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

The Department of Family Medicine is one of eleven clinical departments at the Brody School of Medicine. The purpose of the department is to improve the health of the people of eastern North Carolina through leadership in Family Medicine education, research and health care services. The department provides accessible, high quality health care for its patients.
