The laboratory of Michael Bachman MD PhD at the University of Michigan is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to train in the fields of bacterial pathogenesis, bacterial genomics and immunopathology. Our goal is to identify shared and unique fitness factors across multiple Gram-negative pathogens during infection, with a particular focus on Klebsiella pneumoniae and bacteremia. We combine genetic screens, gene expression profiling, and in vivo growth rate measurements in animal models with the goal of discovering new diagnostic and therapeutic targets.
The primary job responsibility for this position is to move the research project forward through experimental work, critical thinking, and coordinating work of others within the lab and with collaborators within the university. Specific tasks include performing and analyzing genome-wide genetic screens, optimization of in vivo infection models for K. pneumoniae, carrying out comparative genomics studies as part of a collaborative group, and characterization of resultant potential fitness and virulence genes. An individualized development plan will be used to identify formal and experiential training to advance towards the fellow’s career goals. As part of their development, this person will help to supervise and mentor others within the laboratory.
The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree or equivalent in a related field.
The candidate should be able to work effectively as part of a team and progress on their projects independently through critical thinking and a strong work ethic. Experience in at least one area including bacterial genetics, bacterial pathogenesis, genomics, and informatics is desired. Candidates with strong written communication skills, as evidenced by previous publications, and excellent oral communication skills are sought.
