Under general supervision, the incumbent uses professional engineering concepts to perform moderately complex engineering assignments. Works in a specialized engineering field on a major training and/or research effort. Works on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
The incumbent is responsible for the development, design, fabrication, programming, and testing of prototype electronic modules (e.g., custom PCBs), along with the maintenance and servicing of a small facility with all the equipment for this kind of development work (the Calit2 electronics lab). Will have general electronics/radio research and development (R&D) support as its area of specialization.
The technical work will include understanding the research and working with one or more Principal Development Engineers in the development of projects undertaken at Calit2. Work with Development Engineers in the design, fabrication, assembly, microcontroller programming, and testing of analog, digital, and RF electronic prototype modules for mobile, wearable, implantable, IoT, and other applications from schematics, sketches, and verbal instructions.
The lab to be maintained will include electronics work benches, soldering stations, and assembly and test facilities. Assists in developing imaginative and thorough technical solutions and may guide and lead less-experienced students and employees.
Graduation from college with major work in engineering and two (2) years of engineering experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity.
Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
Strong organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.
Experience designing printed circuit boards using commercial schematic capture and layout tools (e.g., Altium, Eagle, Orcad, etc.).
Experience with electrical/RF test equipment such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, high-speed oscilloscopes, signal generators etc.
Experience with the board assembly process: identify and acquire appropriate circuit components and connectors, solder surface-mount components, and bond-wire IC chips.
Experience with embedded programming of microcontrollers, wireless modules, etc.
Ability and/or interest to develop a wide range of R&D-support capabilities to become involved in multiple programs or aspects of the same program.
Demonstrated experience working on research projects.
Proficient operation of a personal computer and software application, such as Access, MS Word and Excel. Knowledge to work with and learn new software for analysis.
Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to instruct others in experimental techniques.
Ability to adhere to established UCSD guidelines for safety and environmental issues.
