The College of Design at Iowa State University is seeking a Model Shop Manager to oversee operations of the College Model Shop, which serves the College of Design (1900 students) and the faculty and staff in the College (approximately 150). The main model shop is 1200 sq ft with an associated CNC room with about 500 sq ft.
The Model Shop Manager hires, trains and supervises student workers and grad students in the use of the machines and maintenance of the shop; budgets and procures shop tools and supplies; develops and updates standard operating procedures and ensures safety measures are continuously followed; makes recommendations and proposals for strategic development of the workshop facility; accommodates new equipment, technologies or program changes; operates, maintains, and establishes and implements safety procedures for the college CNC machine; operates a variety of CAD software (Rhino, AutoCAD, SolidWorks) to develop 2d and 3d modeling and ability to manipulate existing models. In addition, the Model shop manager works with faculty and members using the shop to develop semester long plans for space, time and material consumption. The selected candidate should be proficient in operating CAM software to establish tool paths to complete projects on the CNC Router using V Carve Pro software.
The successful candidate will have excellent organizational skills, problem solving skills and collegiality and collaboration.
