The Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University in cooperation with NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) seeks a postdoctoral or more senior researcher for research related to better understand the climate response to smoke particles emit from fires using the GFDL Earth System Model (ESM4). In ESM4 the fires are simulated dynamically by the land model (LM4.1). To take advantage of the fires evolving dynamically with climate, the fire model should include emission of carbonaceous aerosols. This will necessitate optimizing the aerosol injection height of aerosol using the most appropriate satellite aerosol products available. Subsequent improvements of the emission parameterization will be carried out from the evaluation of simulated aerosol properties by ground-based, aircraft and satellite observations. The research will then examine how the fires respond to natural variability as well as land use changes historically and for the next 100 years. This will also include an assessment of aerosol-climate interactions through radiative flux perturbations for the different projected CMIP6 Shared Socio-Economic Pathways (SSP) scenarios up to 2100. This position will provide the opportunity for collaboration within GFDL and Princeton University. Presentation of the research through publications or seminars in and outside GFDL will be encouraged. The selected candidate will have one or more of the following attributes: (a) a strong background in global land-atmosphere and aerosol modeling; (b) experience in analyzing global climate models and observational datasets; (c) proven skills in using climate-research statistics.
