The Harvard University Center for African Studies (CAS) is a university-wide interdisciplinary research center dedicated to broadening public and scholarly awareness about Africa, African experiences, and African perspectives. CAS provides opportunities and resources for academics, students, and scholars to learn, research, and share knowledge related to Africa; supports programs that foster student and faculty engagement with the continent; collaborate across Africa to share the Center's resources and knowledge; and diversifies the interdisciplinary understanding of Africa by encouraging people to think about the continent in new ways. In addition to our office on Harvard's campus in Cambridge, CAS has an Africa Office located in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Communications Officer is responsible for managing all aspects of the Center for African Studies' communications efforts. The communications portfolio includes marketing and branding, reports and publications (both print and electronic), media relations, and maintaining the CAS website and social media platforms. The Communications Officer also supports the Oppenheimer Faculty Director and Director of Administration and Finance with donor stewardship and alumni engagement.
Duties and responsibilities: Communications Strategy
Oversees the CAS communications strategy and associated budgets
Conceives and researches new opportunities for the use of communications materials to enhance connections both locally and on the continent
Works within and outside Harvard to broaden CAS' reach to the community and to build connections with peer institutions both domestically and in Africa
Collaborates with Program Manager and Student Support and Outreach Officer to produce program materials and promote events
Manages the CAS website, social media platforms, mailing listservs, and contact database
Produces and distributes the weekly CAS newsletter
Produces—including content development, formatting, and printing— posters, program books, pamphlets, annual reports, press packs, policy briefs, online and paper invitations, cards, stationery, and other CAS publications and marketing materials
Develops scripts/talking points for events and promotional videos, often in collaboration with faculty and/or external constituents
Engages and works with graphic designers, copy editors, photographers, videographers, and other external vendors as needed
Develops and maintains CAS branding, including coordination with the Africa Office
Ensures appropriate use of the Harvard and CAS name, brand, and trademark as outlined by the Office of the Provost and other internal constituents
Develops and maintains media contacts across a range of outlets (local, national, and international; print, broadcast, radio, and electronic)
Drafts and distributes media releases
Promotes events on social media and across the University
Tracks and manages invitation event invitations
Attends and assists at a variety of events, conferences, and meeting structures on behalf of CAS
Develops and maintains CAS photo and video archive
Participates in a range of on-campus information sessions for students
Works closely with the Oppenheimer Faculty Director and Director of Administration and Finance on donor relations and stewardship as well as alumni engagement
Coordinates donor visits with staff and faculty across the University
Produces donor acknowledgement letters
Manages CAS Africa Advisory Board and Leadership Council communication

This is a one-year term appointment.

Union: 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary
3+ years' experience in communications, public relations, or marketing
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work under pressure and against tight deadlines
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
Some nights/weekends and occasional travel may be required
Experience creating audiovisual content and knowledge of graphic design, publishing, and/or photo and video software applications
Experience in copy editing
Familiarity with or experience living or working in Africa
