Academic Support and Mentoring (ASM) provides innovative support services and resources to ensure educational access and personal success for every student at UMKC. In addition, the department houses The International Center for Supplemental Instruction (SI) which provides training and support to institutions across the U.S. and leads a network of five national centers for SI in four different countries.
The Student Support Specialist is responsible for providing program-specific administrative support to the department of Academic Support and Mentoring, specifically to the Writing Studio, Supplemental Instruction, Tutoring, Summer Bridge Scholars, and Student Success Seminars, among others. This is an outstanding professional opportunity to gain experience across a variety of student academic support areas while serving as a team member within The International Center for Supplemental Instruction.
Roles and Responsibilities
Provide cross-functional support across ASM's initiatives including, but not limited to:
Providing functional supervision and support for approximately 150 student employees
Planning/organizing student employee training and professional development
Assisting with student staff interviewing/hiring
Conducting observations and implementing quality improvement practices
Supporting data collection/maintenance
Organize and facilitate events including scheduling, logistics, and marketing
Support technology integration and data management
Assist in the planning and implementation of the bi-annual International Conference on Supplemental Instruction
Perform related duties as assigned
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Bachelor's degree or higher in Education, Psychology, Higher Education, or other related fields
Experience working within an academic support program such as tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, writing assistance, and/or transition/bridge programming
Experience working in higher education
Experience with event planning and/or event marketing
Experience using social media as an engagement strategy
Experience with technology integration using programs such as PeopleSoft, Canvas, Chatbot, Wordpress, Excel, TutorTrac, and/or Canva
Experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting data
Experience providing professional development or making presentations
Ability to work occassional evening and weekend hours is required
