This is a full-time, classified, CWA position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Note: This position is in the “NL” category of employment (non-fixed work week). Non-faculty employees in the “NL” category of employment (non-fixed work week) have no claim or entitlement to time off or cash compensation for hours worked beyond their normal schedule. However, unusual requirements for additional work time by these employees may be compensated by allowing roughly comparable amounts of time off, provided prior approval is given by the supervisor and Unit Head.
It is the policy of the College to grant hour for hour compensatory time off, with above-referenced approval, only when employees are required to work on a regularly scheduled day off. For those with Monday through Friday schedules, this means a Saturday, Sunday or Holiday.
Established in 1969, Ramapo College offers bachelor’s degrees in the arts, business, humanities, social sciences and the sciences, as well as in professional studies, which include business, elementary education, nursing and social work. The Linux Systems Administrator is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the high availability production and test environments of the college. Must be a self-starter, work independently as well as with a diverse technical team, and take ownership. Provides tier 2 operations support which includes identifying, resolving or escalating hardware and/or software issues that span multiple technology domains; primarily focused on supporting the Linux computing platform.This is a high visibility position in the technology group.
Duties • Install new/rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements • Install and configure systems which support infrastructure and application development staff. • Administers systems by actively managing patching, routine maintenance and backups to include the scheduling and execution of related tasks. • Identifies, diagnoses and resolves system alerts and time sensitive events that could impact system availability leveraging an escalation path when appropriate. • Responds to system failures and works with support or vendor teams to minimize business impact. • Engineering of systems administration-related solutions for various project and operational needs. • Participates in all meetings related to change, incident or problem management • Identifies performance issues and trends impacting system availability or expected behavior and work to incorporate them into the problem management process. • Develop, maintain and document installation and configuration procedures. • Contribute to and maintain system standards. • Contribute to and maintain security posture of the system in accordance to IT Security Policies and industry best practices. • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage resources • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree. • Preferred Majors: Computer Science or related field • Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute experience on a year for year basis. EXPERIENCE: • Four (4) years of experience working in a 24x7 production environment • Experience with Linux: RedHat, CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu • Experience with MySQL and/or MariaDB • Experience working with clustered / load-balanced servers • Knowledge of Shell, Perl, and/or Python scripting • Knowledge with OS and network security (firewalls and system hardening) • Experience with iSCSI protocol and NAS (network attached storage) solutions • Knowledge of protocols such as DNS, HTTP, LDAP, SMTP and SNMP ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: • Experience with Virtualization, specifically VMWare ESXi and fail-over scenarios • Knowledge of configuring and implementing Nagios monitoring software • Knowledge of Apache configurations and web server admin tasks
