The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) has an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the inaugural Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for plasma material interactions. This position comes with the opportunity to grow and advance research initiatives and understandings of plasma-material interactions and mixed states of plasmas, liquids, and solids, standing up a new research Division at PPPL.
The Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Plasma Material Interactions is responsible for providing leadership, stewardship and strategic vision for the capability and Division. The ALD will be charged with expanding the Plasma Material Interactions capability into a significant element of the laboratory’s research portfolio, drive strategic planning, research quality and integrity, and communications regarding plasma material interactions research. The ideal candidate will be passionate about developing a strong program that will both partner with industry and enhance the laboratory’s interactions with Princeton University.

• In close collaboration with the Directorate, develop a strategic plan and long-term research vision for the plasma material interactions portfolio, along with a plan to execute the vision, including garnering funding, building the scientific infrastructure of facilities and capabilities, as well as recruiting and developing an outstanding and diverse workforce to build up the Division and capability.
• Develop joint portfolio of multidisciplinary proposals addressing the strategic priorities that align to the overall Lab mission.
• In collaboration with the Directorate, periodically review the overall organizational structure in relation to the capability and programs to ensure they support the short and long-term strategic objectives of the Laboratory.
• Develop coordinated programs with Princeton University, including opportunities with the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials (PRISM).
• Identify and build critical research collaborations with other PPPL scientific disciplines, national laboratories, academic institutions, and private sector entities.
• Proactively promote science education and work to build a pipeline of the next generation of researchers in plasma material interactions through outreach and education programs at PPPL and with other national laboratories and educational institutions.
• Integrate scientific programs across the research area and be responsible for science DOE Performance Evaluation and Measurement Plan (PEMP) outcomes.
• Manage group leaders responsible for programmatic activities within the respective Division.
• Act as chief spokesperson for the research area to internal groups, Princeton University, DOE, national labs, and other external entities.
• Lead and build consensus within the Directorate to develop Laboratory-wide research initiatives, as well as policies and guidelines.
• In collaboration with the Directorate, oversee the preparation and development of the annual budget, develop short and long-term financial strategies to ensure proper funding levels, and target and develop new funding sources.
• Ensure stewardship of and adherence to appropriate financial, procurement, budget, property, and accounting policies, procedures, and protocols for the respective division.
• Ensure programmatic and project operations are cost effective, efficient and optimized within constraints of the budget.
• Effectively communicate relevant information to key stakeholders both internal and external to the Laboratory.
• Develop and maintain strong professional connections with senior DOE officials, including, but not limited to, the leaders of the Office of Science, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, and relevant DOE Technology Offices.
• In partnership with the Lab’s communications team, ensure that the division and research area communications strategies are aligned with the institution’s strategies.
• Report directly to the Deputy Director of Research and serve as the senior leader of the newly formed Plasma Material Interactions Division. Hold regular meetings (e.g. monthly) with direct reports and ensure effective collaborations within and integration of area programs.
• PhD in the Physical Sciences or Engineering required • Internationally recognized record of research accomplishments in related field
• Strong publication record and related recognition by awards and honors • Effective communication skills • Experience leading and managing multi-disciplinary operational or scientific research program • Experience in developing a strategic plan, making high-level strategic decisions, and representing a
multidisciplinary operational or scientific research program to both internal and external audiences • Understanding of the issues and challenges of running a large organization, including effective people, project, budget, and asset management
• Substantial knowledge of, or interest in learning, specific regulatory requirements (e.g. DOE, Office of
Science, and National Laboratories)
