Hoxworth Blood Center is seeking a Research Scientist to work in the laboratory of Dr. Jose Cancelas, MD, PhD, Hoxworth Blood Center Director and Professor of Pediatrics.
At Hoxworth Blood Center, we can advance therapies for cancer and trauma by applying improvements in the blood and stem cell transplantation therapies, immunotherapy and innovative regenerative medicine approaches. This position is an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated candidate to join as a Research Scientist in Dr. Cancelas’ group. Dr. Cancelas’ group has contributed to the development and understanding of novel methods to mobilize hematopoietic stem cells, target bone marrow failure syndromes and treat leukemia. The successful applicant will explore benign and malignant hematopoiesis in human cells and in animal models of disease. The overarching aim is to provide novel insights into how blood is formed and leukemia develops aiming to identify targets of intervention. In this position, you will be responsible to design and perform complex in vitro and in vivo experiments, and analyze data independently. Developing new experimental procedures and publishing research results are expected. This position requires extensive experience in mouse genetics and expertise in using contemporary recombinant technologies in studying mouse models; analyze epigenomes and omics sequencing (RNAseq, scRNAseq, citeseq, Cut&Runseq, ATACseq). The job duty also includes training and supervision of lab members on relevant laboratory procedures and techniques.

A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate related discipline and three (3) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Master’s degree in an appropriate related scientific or other relevant discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience.
Desired candidates will have a PhD degree in an appropriate related discipline and a minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible related, postdoctoral research experience.
