Reporting to theDirector of Planning and Content within Vanderbilt University's Division ofCommunications, the Planning and Content Specialist is responsible fordeveloping and implementing external communications plans and tactics thatenhance Vanderbilt University's reputation and advance the university's missionas a premier academic research institution. Leveraging storytelling expertise,this position will gather news, create and implement communications plans,develop messaging, write stories and coordinate dissemination of storypackages. The Planning and Content Specialist will proactively buildrelationships with faculty and staff and will collaborate with peers within theDivision of Communications, including the media relations, social media, videoand University Relations teams.
The Office of StrategicCommunications designs and executes integrated communications strategies toprotect and enhance Vanderbilt's local, national and international reputation,and positions the university as one of the world's leading academic researchinstitutions across a variety of digital and traditional channels.
Seeks out compellingnarratives to support the university's strategic communications goals.
Develops and implementsintegrated communications plans and multimedia story packages that promoteVanderbilt University's faculty, staff, students, research and resources to awide variety of audiences.
Researches, plans, writes and edits content forVanderbilt University's external channels, including Vanderbilt.edu andResearch News; uses data to evaluate the content's impact.
Assists Vanderbilt faculty with editorialcontributions to The Conversation, Futurity and other partner media channels.
Assists the video team withstory development and production and plans photography coverage as needed.
Follows industry-relatednews and generates ideas to amplify content.
Provides communications support for specificschools, colleges, departments or centers of the university.
Builds and maintains relationships with facultyand administrators to identify storytelling opportunities and opportunities tojoin the national conversation; advises deans, directors, faculty, staff onlocal and national external communications opportunities for their programs andresearch.
Plans and maintains editorial calendar.
Works closely with partnersacross the Division of Communications to coordinate communications efforts andensure consistent cross-channel messaging.
Performs other duties asassigned.
This position does notsupervise others and reports administratively and functionally to the Directorof Planning and Content.
Profile of an Ideal Candidate
A Bachelor's degree from anaccredited institution of higher education is necessary.
A Master's degree from anaccredited institution of higher education is preferred.
Three years of experience incommunications, journalism or related field is necessary.
An ability to demonstrateexcellent news judgment and an excellent sense of what is appropriate for thebrand.
Excellent interview, researchand writing skills.
Self-starter with ability toindependently design and execute on communications priorities.
An ability to collaboratewith Division of Communications colleagues and communicate comfortably withvarious internal audiences outside of the Division of Communications such asfaculty and staff.
Experience and comfortworking in a deadline-driven environment of multiple projects and quickturn-around requirements.
Utmost adherence toconfidentiality and business ethics; demonstrated outstanding judgment anddiscretion.
Fluency with social mediaand web content preferred.
Demonstrated understandingof the university's mission, values, goals and priorities and an ability toensure that all are considered in developing communications strategiespreferred.
