The School of Marine and Environmental Affairs (SMEA) at the University of Washington (UW), in collaboration with the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, is looking for a post-doctoral research fellow to contribute to a research project investigating the economics of conservation planning for salmon recovery in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
Conservation planning for Pacific salmon is particularly difficult given their complex life histories, the complex set of threats they face, and the diverse set of stakeholders dependent on salmon and their habitats. Likewise, management interventions to promote salmon conservation are heterogeneous in terms of the type of intervention, the environments where they occur, and the stakeholders they affect.
This research will evaluate management scenarios to investigate the cost effectiveness of alternative conservation actions or strategies. The candidate will integrate models of biophysical processes affecting salmon survival (e.g. life cycle models) and data on costs of salmon recovery projects to predict the costs, benefits, and other outcomes of interest, associated with the management scenarios.
The research fellow will be supervised by Dr. Sunny Jardine (School of Marine and Environmental Affairs at the University of Washington). The fellow will have an office at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center and will work closely with Drs. Robert Fonner and Dan Holland in the Conservation Biology Division of the Northwest Fisheries Science Center. The fellow will also work interactively with key stakeholders involved with recovery of Columbia Basin salmon populations through the Columbia Basin Partnership.
The ideal candidate has skills and interests related to the fields of quantitative ecology, environmental economics, policy analysis, and conservation planning. Specific qualifications for the position are outlined below.
The position is for a period of 12 months (100% FTE) with the possibility of being renewed for an additional year.

Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in Economics, Applied Economics, Fisheries Science, Quantitative Ecology, Mathematical Biology, or a closely related field of study
Strong programming capabilities (e.g. R, Matlab, Stata etc.)
Experience with dynamic analysis of economic and biological phenomena, policy simulation, and dynamic optimization, dynamic programming
Experience with spatial datasets/ spatial statistics
Experience with longitudinal datasets/ time-series statistics
Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to communicate interdisciplinary research to broad audiences in English
Record of publishing research in peer-reviewed journals
