The Department of Radiology at the University of Washington is recruiting for one full-time, faculty member at the level of Research Assistant Professor, non-tenure, to join the University of Washington School of Medicine at the Harborview Medical Center. The faculty member will also serve as a member of the Vascular Imaging Lab (VIL). School of Medicine faculty members have an annual service period of 12 months (July 1-June 30). The anticipated start date for this position is October 1, 2019.
University of Washington Harborview Medical Center (HMC) is a tertiary care center located in downtown Seattle, WA, and is the only level 1 trauma center covering 5 states (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Idaho and Montana), with almost 6000 hospital admissions for trauma each year, including vascular trauma. HMC is also a primary neurovascular and vascular center and the only Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center in Washington state. HMC treats over 800 strokes per year, with approximately 170 acute stroke interventions. In addition, more than 250 intracranial aneurysms are treated surgically or endovascularly per year with more than 5000 unruptured aneurysms evaluated and followed up. HMC has state-of-the art facilities and imaging equipment, including 3.0T Siemens Prisma, 1.5T GE Artist and 1.5T Siemens Avanto MRI scanners, which perform the complete range of advanced MR applications. University of Washington has master research agreements with all the major MRI vendors.
The mission of VIL is to improve scientific understanding of cardiovascular disease mechanisms and its associated risk factors to improve identification of high-risk stroke, heart disease, and other vessel diseases. VIL is organized around a core group of interdisciplinary investigators who are mutually invested in developing and maintaining shared clinical and technical research work on vessel walls using imaging approaches. Activities include conducting and developing MRI techniques and image analysis methods for vessel wall imaging and using innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to vessel wall imaging.
The Research Assistant Professor will be expected to form his/her independent funded research program in vascular imaging of diseases, especially aneurysm rupture risk prediction, and utilize Magnetic Resonance Imaging methods and analysis. Ideally the program will include HMC investigators from Radiology, Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, and Mechanical Engineering and be based at the Harborview Medical Center to help develop and expand the imaging research program while also collaborating with investigators in the VIL. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Applications are expected to have a PhD or MD/PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, and at least two years of postdoctoral training and one year of experience utilizing vessel wall imaging techniques which may be acquired concurrently during postdoctoral training. Candidates should demonstrate a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications in MRI methodology developments and applications, and success in managing an independently funded research program, including either previous or current NIH funding. Candidates should also have at least one year of experience in pulse sequence programming in the Philips/Siemens environments and experience may be acquired concurrently during postdoctoral training. In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (on-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or foreign equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
