The Director of The Garage San Francisco reports into the Executive Director and will establish the operation and programming in the Bay Area. This includes but is not limited to researching, creating, testing, administration, and building programming at The Garage San Francisco. The position will expand connections with alumni, students, and faculty and collaborate with all innovation and entrepreneurial efforts across the Bay Area, and nationality, operationalizing the strategic vision for The Garage. This position will report to the Executive Director in ensuring all fiscal, operations, fundraising, marketing, development, human resources, technology, and programmatic strategies are defined and implemented. The Director will provide guidance, network and leadership in all aspects of commercialization for alumni, students, and faculty using the resources of The Garage SF. This position is expected to develop relationships within Northwestern’s entrepreneurial community in the Bay Area, as well as nationally, in order to leverage a network of investors, entrepreneurs and other partners.
Establish a San Francisco site for The Garage. Develop a strategic plan,while ensuring that the operational priorities are aligned with The Garage’s core mission, to maximize The Garage space in San Francisco. Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship to ensure open communication about the measurement of financial, programmatic and impact performance against stated milestones and goals.
Provide mentorship, coaching and encouragement for students and faculty in multidisciplinary collaborations and support for creativity, innovative and/or business start-up activities; Maintains an environment where alumni can connect and students can thrive; Oversee proof-of-concept work, business cultivation, collaboration opportunities, and new programming in the Garage SF space for Northwestern University’s students and faculty, as well as alumni entrepreneurs; Leverage mentors throughout San Francisco and beyond.
Execute comprehensive marketing, branding and development strategies that will ensure consistency with the University; Provide updates to the Executive Director, channeled to various Schools to promote The Garage SF.
Assist in the creation and revision of all PR content for The Garage SF.
Operationalizes strategies that attract partners to develop technologies; Nurture relationships with industry and investors; Enhance revenue from major donors, foundations, government agencies, angel investors, venture capitalists and corporations.
Maintain excellent relations with all stakeholders.
5-10 years experience at startups, tech companies, or in venture capital.
A passion for working with founders and experience mentoring students or coaching startup founders.
Comfort with ambiguity, experimentation and new ideas Enthusiasm for entrepreneurship and building new ideas. Excellent rapport with the Bay Area tech and business communities.
Excellence in written and oral presentation and communication skills and the experience and proclivity to be an outgoing spokesperson, relationship builder and fundraiser.
