Columbia University School of Professional Studies invites applications for the full-time position of Industry Relations Specialist for the Sports Management Program. The position will offer guidance to students and alumni as they cultivate their professional interests and goals. The services provided would include; career counseling, career programming, and assisting the program in logistics of workshops, panels, events, and information sessions. The Industry Relations Specialist works as part of the Sports Management team in providing students with individual advising sessions to gain a better understanding of student's scope of work and to provide insight and advice for career placement and advancement. The Specialist will work closely with the program to market the program to the industry, facilitate and evaluate career development programming, and support workshops, panels, speakers, and networking opportunities for students. This role will ensure that students have the opportunity to explore career options and develop career decision-making skills.
Advising - Student Support
Provide career advising in group and individual coaching sessions to students. Evaluate student abilities, skills, and interests by using aptitude and achievement assessments and administering assessment inventories, mock interviews, and job search techniques. Provide guidance and seek training on counseling issues where appropriate.
Industry Relationship Building
The incumbent will build and maintain industry relationships to create pathways for internship and career opportunities for students and alums. Using his/her personal network and program connections, he/she will create networking opportunities for current students and alums. He/she will develop initiatives focused on industry-specific career outreach in the sports industry.
Strategic Planning and Program Development
Assist in the development and implementation of the program's strategic goals and objectives by overseeing the creation and maintenance of a program professional development requirement. The incumbent will do this by building relationships with organizations, creating placement opportunities and implementing process protocols for students within the organizations, and ensuring that students are fulfilling their obligation to all aspects of the requirement and the participating organizations. The incumbent will track student participation in on-going events, compile outcomes, and create and maintain reporting systems to ensure that the goals of the professional development requirement are met.
Data and Infrastructure Management
Create metrics for tracking, assessing, and reporting on career services outcomes. Utilize data to inform internship and career opportunities with industry professionals and organizations. Develop an infrastructure to maintain career development resources such as job and volunteer opportunities, professional development, and networking that is available to all Sports Management students (e.g., external resources as well as internally produced materials).
General Administration and Events Management
Assist in the development and implementation of programmatic events as needed. Support the Academic Director and Deputy Academic Director in the creation, growth, and stewardship of program support committees as they are realized.
Perform other duties and special projects as assigned or requested.
Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent related experience required
4 years of related experience necessary
Experience with career advising in a higher educational setting and strong knowledge and experience with career coaching Substantial experience with computer programs, including MS Office applications, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Must be detail orientated, self-motivated, and able to work independently and carefully manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously with short deadlines in a high volume environment
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies
Ability to work well under pressure with short deadlines and changing priorities is needed
Candidates must be self-starters with the ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a team environment
Candidates must possess strong organizational, time management, and prioritization skills
Strong coaching skills and understanding of diverse cultural backgrounds
