This is a major and principal gift fundraising position. Patients come from across the US and around the globe. Our approach is grounded in strong relationships with the clinical faculty. The department’s leadership supports and is actively engaged in our efforts. Responsibilities include development and implementation of fundraising and engagement strategies for annual, major and principal gift prospective and current donors for the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins. The Senior Associate Director will manage a portfolio of approximately 120 prospects capable of providing significant support to the Department, and will conduct appropriate cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities. The Senior Associate Director will work closely with faculty, administrators and patients as well as professional colleagues to accomplish fundraising goals.
Develop a breadth of knowledge related to the 14 divisions within the Department of Neurology, and a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching and patient care components of the multiple divisions this position directly supports. Attain and maintain specialist-level ability to articulate the need for support of unrestricted funds and priority needs within these areas. Act as the Chief Advancement Officer for two or more divisions and work with Division heads to identify the needs of the divisions.
Work closely with senior members of the development team to develop and implement an appropriate plan to identify and qualify new major and principal gift level prospects. Make discovery calls and build a prospect pool based on new prospects and current and past donors. Initiate gift strategies, cultivate and solicit prospects through personal visits and written communication, with an annual goal of at least 90 face-to-face donor visits.
Manage a portfolio of approximately 120 prospects including current and prospective donors, comprised of individuals (grateful patients and friends), foundations, organizations, etc. with the goal to personally solicit for major gifts to support the priority needs of the department and assigned divisions. The focus will be on gifts of at least $100,000.
Prepare proposals, solicitation letters and other cultivation and stewardship materials for prospects and donors. Draft communication to prospects and donors, on behalf of the department.
Help motivate education and train faculty to successfully guide them through the development process to engage them as fundraising partners; focus will be on identifying and evaluating giving potential of patient prospects through personal visits and research, development and implementation of appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies, with the aim to secure major gift support. Make presentations at faculty meetings.
Coordinate stewardship plans for donors at the $100,000+ level. Work directly with assigned donors and families, visiting them to steward funds. Write acknowledgement letters; design and produce stewardship reports; coordinate donor recognition.
Spearhead Neurology Development office efforts to visit and qualify grateful patient prospects identified through the Office of Resource Development of the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Develop a comprehensive understanding of all development procedures for the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, Department of Neurology and Johns Hopkins Medicine and be integral in participating and helping lead these practices.

Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum five years of professional development or related professional experience required. Preferred experience includes personal solicitation of six- and seven-figure gifts, with a documented record of productivity, preferably in health care or higher education. Must be able to work independently, ability to work as part of a team, manage projects, determine priorities and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality. Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills and demonstrated effective writing ability required. Strong computer literacy skills required and the ability to learn new software. Must be able to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Travel is required.
